3 2. Do you have a self-care routine? “No not really. I have been dealing with a lot so it can be difficult to find some DND time. I know I need to find time for myself though.” 3. Are you spiritual or religious ? “I do have faith and hope for the future, but I’m more so spiritual.” 4. How do you feel about your mental health? “It could be better. I feel like I am overwhelmed, anxious, emotional about all that is going on.” 5. What stressful events have you experienced lately? “I just found out that my sixteen and a half year old daughter is with a child, my wife has commitment issues, her mother and I are not getting along, and I am late on rent due to my job cutting my hours. All of this transpired within two months. Just back-to-back blows.” 6. How have the recent changes of transitional events affected you? “At fifty years old I should be on a higher level—stable income which equals a great job, healthy relationships, on top of these bills, and not my child being a teen mother.” Mandy reports that she failed her daughter because she did not teach her adequate skills for safe sexual behaviors.” 7. What is it like navigating today’s pressured society in regards to culture, sexuality, and race in middle adulthood? “I feel like lesbian relationships are being more accepted of course the naysayers will have something to say—you can’t please everyone. I sometimes become hesitant to let people know that my daughter is pregnant— especially all of the negative comments of parenting that comes with it.” 8. Are you able to identify your functional strengths? “Umm, that’s a hard one. I know I need therapy. I am capable, I tried to be a good mom, I’m dependable—I can’t think of anything else right now.”
