HUM 5300 Healthcare Crisis Healthcare crisis in the United States. The unsustainably high cost of healthcare and high mortality rate for preventable illnesses and maternal mortality is cause for concern that something is wrong within the system. The US has on record the highest rate of pregnancy-related deaths (23.8 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2020) when compared to similar countries (3.6 deaths per 100,000 live births). The maternal mortality rate for Black mothers is about 3x the rate for White mothers. However, every race/ethnicity, socioeconomic, and age group in the US sees higher maternal mortality rates than the average in other countries. Hospital admissions for diabetes and congestive heart failure were more frequent in the US than average. Rates of post-operative complications are an essential measure of hospital safety. Pulmonary embolisms and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) are common complications after major surgeries. The prevalence of postoperative complications for these procedures is higher in the US. Analyze how the US healthcare system performs. Productivity in the US is lower compared to other countries. This country has many resources. However, many people cannot access them when needed or cannot afford them (Garber & Skinner, 2008; Lyford & Lash, 2019). Equality in the distribution of healthcare is something that could have been more highly regarded. However, if we look at the results of other countries, productivity would improve if care were shared fairly with people with similar needs. The lack of communication and education to the public hinders the push for better reforms. There is a healthcare crisis, and if many Americans were asked this question, there would be mixed responses, and others would rather complain about the healthinsurance system and how it works. The price of health insurance alone adds to this country's healthcare crisis. A policy reform that reduces consumer/patient spending can be expected to be avoided since fewer funds in healthcare mean less income for healthcare providers and businesses (Garber & Skinner, 2008). Politics also plays a big part in how the healthcare system performs in this country. Consider who opposed the ACA, which passed in 2010.

Another factor that adds to this crisis is how high the mortality rate is for preventable diseases. In 2021, 27.2 million people did not have health insurance (Bureau, U. C. (n.d.)). The uninsured rate of children (including undocumented children) has also decreased, and as of last year, now those under 19 can apply for Medicaid regardless of their immigration status. Consider the fact that as technology advances, so does the cost of health care. "The United States typically does not consider effectiveness relative to its costs or the costs of alternative treatments" (Garber & Skinner, 2008, p.11), and this may be due to a lack of pushback from the public as well as political barriers. Evaluate the implications for this in terms of service delivery for human services providers. Considering that healthcare costs are rising and wages remain stagnant and unbalanced simultaneously, it is safe to assume that legal and political forces need to be considered so that policies that combat this issue can make a difference. Discuss what you believe are the challenges leaders will face in managing human resources in human services organizations. One challenge that human service professionals will continue to face is the lack of available resources for people who do not have health insurance or cannot afford to pay their premiums because the cost of paying for most of their medical bills is too high. Another challenge this country faces is that lawmakers are not considering the things that are not working for the better of the public interest. This may be due to multiple reasons; some may be due to political affiliations, and others may choose to continue with the system in place because it is simply easier than revamping and starting from scratch. Another challenge is how there may be too many comparisons. Jarman & Greer (2020) mention that while it is essential to note the differences, which can help us improve our way of living), it is essential to not focus on these alone.
