HUM5300 week 3 discussion Hi class! I do believe that there is a healthcare crisis in the United States. Before the pandemic, a significant number of people were uninsured or underinsured, resulting in difficulties accessing medical care. Tragically, a substantial number of deaths occurred annually due to the inability to see a doctor when needed. Additionally, a significant number of families faced financial hardship, with many declaring bankruptcy due to medical debt. Affordability of prescription drugs was also a challenge for a considerable portion of the population. Furthermore, healthcare outcomes, such as maternal deaths, life expectancy, and infant mortality, were comparatively poorer compared to other industrialized nations. These issues underscore the need for improvements in the healthcare system to ensure better access, affordability, and outcomes for all Americans. In America, unlike any other major country, when you lose your job, you lose your healthcare. Concerns about the quality of care and patient safety are heightening; patients and payers now publicly share these concerns and want to make providers more accountable (Lofgren, Karpf, Perman, & Higdon, 2006). The United States demonstrates poorer performance in long-term health outcomes measures, including life expectancy, as well as certain treatment outcomes such as maternal mortality and congestive heart failure hospital admissions. Patient safety measures, such as obstetric trauma with instrument and medication or treatment errors, also show room for improvement (. Additionally, some patients in the U.S. report not receiving necessary care due to cost. However, it is worth noting that the U.S. performs similarly to or better than peer nations in certain measures of treatment outcomes, such as mortality rates within 30 days of acute hospital treatment, and patient safety, such as rates of post-operative sepsis. These findings highlight both areas of concern and areas where the U.S. healthcare system demonstrates comparative strengths. Effectively managing human resources becomes essential in order to navigate these pressures and ensure the success and sustainability in human services. Human resource management in human services, particularly in the healthcare sector, can be challenging. Financial barriers often result in delays or insufficient delivery of care, which can have a negative impact on overall health outcomes. Human services leaders face the task of addressing various challenges, such as recruiting and retaining competent professionals, ensuring their teams are capable of providing quality service. Additionally, burnout and attrition become significant
concerns when resource limitations hinder the ability to provide adequate support (Ban, Drahnak-Faller & Towers, 2003). These factors highlight the importance of effective human resource management strategies in healthcare organizations to address these challenges and maintain a capable and resilient workforce.
