Session 2 Reflection Paper
When it comes to romantic relationships, churches are positioned to give us invaluable support as we consider trying to find our lifelong partners. Spiritual wisdom, along with church community engagement and relationship education are three key examples that the church is equipped with to help guide us towards a faith-centered relationship. This can range from nurturing God-centered connections to organizing events that provide opportunities to meet like-
minded individuals. This can even be used to facilitate mentorships from older married couples so that they can pass down their knowledge. In this paper, I will go over a few reasons as to how I think the church helps assist young adults in finding lifelong mates while honoring God in the process.
The best way that churches help young adults find lifelong mates is by encouraging God-
centered relationships and by promoting wholesome courtship practices. Churches can emphasize the importance of centering relationships around faith in God, meaning that singles are encouraged to look for partners who share their values and beliefs and are committed to living in Christian principles. In Dr. Albert Mohler Jr’s article, The True Path to Love? Sorting out the Options,
he quotes author Lauren Winner by saying “Marriage is not merely for the married, it is also for the church, because marriage hints at and reminds us of the eschatological union between Christ and the church.” (Mohler, 2005). Churches can also encourage courtship that honors the principles of the Christian faith which is geared more towards the spiritual and emotional aspects of the relationship instead of the physical. Dr. Mohler stresses the importance of courtship by quoting author Douglas Wilson of New St. Andrews College. He says, "courtship
