1.
Select a cultural work
from the world around you, one with cultural or historical interest, and briefly describe it in your submission. This cultural work should meet the following conditions:
o
It can take any form and be from any physical modality (visual, aural, tactile, and so on).
o
It should be a form of expression that you might encounter any day, which intrigues you and makes you want to know more about it.
o
It must be a specific work; for example, instead of choosing the American flag,
you might elect to analyze the flag at the capitol building in Washington, DC.
o
It should be artificial in nature, with aesthetic design elements.
-
The cultural work that I chose to discuss is the Grand Gardens of the Biltmore Estate, which was created by a landscape architect named Fredrick Law Olmsted, in the late 1800s. The Biltmore Estate is a beautiful and historical masterpiece, made up of 8,000 acres of farmland in Asheville, North Carolina. There are a total of six formal and informal gardens that collectively make up the grounds of the famous estate.
2.After choosing a cultural work to evaluate,
answer the following questions:
o
What characteristics or elements of the work stand out to you?
o
What do you think the creator intended to express?
o
Were they successful?
-
The characteristics of the Biltmore Estate Gardens resemble European-style designs. The specific features that stand out to me are the thousands of exotic and tropical plants,
bamboo, orchids, banana trees, and water lily pools throughout the garden’s grounds. -
In my opinion, Olmsted’s intentions of creating the gardens was to utilize art to improve
nature, and to teach people to value the importance of conserving our forests. -
I certainly think that Olmsted successfully accomplished his intended goal behind the creation of this iconic botanical paradise. The Biltmore Estate Garden was made a National Historic Landmark in 1963. In 1966, the Garden was also added to the National Registry of Historic Places. 3.Next,
select a cultural work
that meets the conditions above but is
from a culture unfamiliar
to you. Reflect on the value or meaning of studying cultural works from different cultures.
-
The Biltmore Gardens are in Asheville, North Carolina, which is relatively close to my hometown in Georgia. Although it’s only a few hours away from where I live, it originated from a time and culture that I am not completely familiar with. Slavery was at an all-time high during the time that the gardens were created, which is a part of a culture that I have never experienced and that I don’t agree with. The Vanderbilt’s are the owners of the Biltmore Estate. The Vanderbilt’s are historically one of the wealthiest families in the world. A culture based on wealth is also not something that I am familiar with. -
It is so important to be knowledgeable about the cultural works from different cultures. We allow ourselves the ability to gain a deeper understanding of the way that other
