Part 1: Case Studies
Erikson's Stage: Initiative vs. Guilt (3 to 6 years old)
Case Study: Josh’s Struggle with Initiative
Josh, a 4-year-old, is experiencing the Initiative vs. Guilt stage according to Erikson's theory. Josh has a vibrant imagination and is eager to explore his surroundings. However, his parents, due to their busy schedules, often discourage him from engaging in creative activities, fearing the
mess he might make. Josh starts feeling guilty about his desire to take the initiative and explore his world.
As a Mental Health Counselor, it is crucial to support Josh in developing a sense of initiative. The counselor can work with Josh's parents to create a safe and structured environment for exploration. Through play therapy and expressive activities, Josh can learn to channel his curiosity appropriately. The counselor may also guide Josh's parents in providing positive reinforcement and encouragement for his initiatives, helping him build confidence and a healthy sense of autonomy.
Erikson's Stage: Industry vs. Inferiority (6 to 12 years old)
Case Study: Jason's Struggle with Inferiority
Jason, an 8-year-old, is navigating the Industry vs. Inferiority stage. He attends school where he is struggling academically and socially, leading to feelings of inferiority. Jason compares himself
to his classmates, perceiving that he falls short in various aspects. These feelings of inadequacy are affecting his self-esteem and overall well-being.
In this case, a Mental Health Counselor can work with Jason to identify and challenge negative thought patterns. Through individual counseling and social skills training, Jason can learn to

build positive relationships and focus on his strengths. Collaborating with teachers to create a supportive learning environment tailored to Jason's needs is essential. The counselor may also involve Jason's parents in the therapeutic process to reinforce positive behaviors at home, fostering a sense of industry and competence.
Piaget's Stage: Preoperational Stage (2 to 7 years old)
Case Study: Emily's Egocentrism
Emily, a 5-year-old, is in Piaget's Preoperational Stage. She struggles with egocentrism, believing that everyone sees the world from her perspective. This leads to challenges in her interactions with peers, as she has difficulty understanding their feelings and viewpoints.
As a Mental Health Counselor, the focus would be on developing Emily's perspective-taking skills. Through play therapy and social interaction exercises, Emily can gradually learn to consider others' perspectives. The counselor may also work with Emily’s parents and teachers to provide consistent guidance and opportunities for cooperative play, helping her develop empathy
and a more accurate understanding of social dynamics.
Piaget's Stage: Concrete Operational Stage (7 to 11 years old)
Case Study: Michael's Conservation Struggles
Michael, a 9-year-old, is navigating Piaget's Concrete Operational Stage. He faces challenges with the conservation of volume, often misjudging quantities when they change shape. This affects his performance in mathematics and science, leading to frustration and a sense of inadequacy.
