Heaven L. Whitaker ECPI Online CJ235 Criminology Professor Sullivan 01/19/24 5.2 Assignment Research Concepts 1. Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the three primary data sources: UCR, NIBRS, and NCVS. Describe the collection methods utilized for these data sources. The strength of UCR data source is that it contains data on the number and characteristics of people arrested. This data can provide a measure of criminal activity. It is the sole source of data on homicide, and it is the standard on which most criminal research is based on. The strength of the National Incident-Based Reporting System is its ability to provide descriptive information about a crime. The strength of The National Crime Victimization Survey data source includes unreported crime that has important information on the victims' personal side. The weakness of UCR data source is that not all crimes are reported. Some law enforcement practices change how reporting is done, and no federal crimes are reported. The weakness of the National Incident-Based Reporting System would be data loss. Any information that was given about a case could also go away because of data losses and breaches. The weakness of the National Crime Victimization Survey is that it relies on personal recollections, and it does not include data on crime patterns including murder and drug use. Although they cover a set of similar crimes, the programs differ in significant ways. First, the programs serve different purposes. The UCR Program’s primary objective is to provide a reliable set of criminal justice statistics for law enforcement administration, operation, and management. BJS established the NCVS to provide previously unavailable information about crime (including crime not reported to police), victims, and offenders. (Planty et al., 2014) 2. Explain how cohorts, observation, and interviews fit into research methods (Be sure to talk about EACH of them!). Are the data collection methods considered "sound" for cohort studies, observation studies, and interviews? Explain.
Cohort’s, observation, and interviews fit into research methods because of the diversity of data that is taken in the types of research. Collecting data whenever crime is committed, and victims use the services it makes the data useful. The collected data is considered sound because of how genuine the source is and when the data was obtained. Research methods are mainly used in collecting qualitative or even quantitative data while conducting research. The methods facilitate recording, analyzing as well as interpreting data. Cohort studies, observations, and interviews are some of the qualitative data collection methods used in research. Cohorts and participating observations are necessary when collecting data where participants require researcher’s participation. That makes the data collected useful. When it comes to interviews, it fits exploratory or even critical elements of research. Interviews are also useful when the researcher is engaged on a personal level with the subject. 3. What value is the criminal justice field placing on data mining and crime mapping? Is this data accepted? Explain. The value of criminal justice on data mining and crime mapping depends on the crime classification during the reporting process. Data mining helps when trying to catch fugitives who committed the same pattern of crime in different jurisdictions. This data could be useful when searching for similar crimes committed to help catch a suspect. References: Planty, M., Langton, L., & Barnett-Ryan, C. (2014, September).
