Module 6 Assignment 1
Research-based teaching approaches are essential in today’s educational landscape because they offer effective teaching techniques that have been demonstrated to improve student learning outcomes. By using these approaches, teachers can make sure their lessons are stimulating, differentiated, engaging and impactful for students. In addition, research-based teaching approaches encourage students to develop critical thinking, solve problems, and develop independence to acquire lifelong learning skills that will assist them throughout their lives. Teachers must assess student needs and then align strategies to address those needs (Thomas, 2015) and as I reflect on the lessons, I carried out during this course I was able to effectively look at my student’s data to drive my instructions. When it comes to using data to improve the quality of teaching and learning, it is evident that some of the most important enablers and barriers include data literacy and leadership (Schildkamp, 2019). In my lessons I demonstrated data literacy using research-based instructional strategy with (NCDPI: Common Core Standards- Cumberland County Schools) ELA RL.5.3 Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text. One example of a research-based instructional strategy that I have implemented is the use of cooperative learning. I divided my students into small groups to perform tasks to solve together. For the lesson pertaining to the Social Emotional Learning theory students were grouped for the role-play and was actively involved in their learning, they worked together to gather information, analyze it, and create a visually appealing anchor chart that displayed their knowledge on Compare and Contrast story elements. Cooperative learning is an important strategy I use because it paves the way for collaboration, communication, and active engagement among students during the lesson and activities. After assessing the students

by viewing their final product during the closing of each lesson I observed improvement with the
standard. I also noticed lots of communication and active engagement especially with the connectivism and constructivist learning theories activities incorporated in the lessons. Another example of research-based instructional strategy that I used in my lessons is scaffolding. In the lesson lots of modeling (I Do, You Do, We Do) and guided practice is performed to help my students build upon the skills and gradually come to understanding the concepts. Moreover, this strategy allowed my students to build upon their prior knowledge of Compare and Contrast story elements that eventually led them to understanding the concept fully
after engaging in discussions, instructional knowledge and activities that cater to their learning styles. In one of my lesson plans that incorporates the Social Learning Theory, I used scaffolding
to guide the students through the process of understanding the characters, settings, and events in the story Blancaflor. I provided step-by-step instructions, utilizing a YouTube video to explain story elements, visual aids, and practice activities that gradually increased in difficulty to promote critical thinking. By providing this structured support, my students grasp the concept and eventually apply it independently on the post assessment they took a few days after the lesson. The data proved that 95% of students grasp the concept. The 5% that did not fully comprehend RL.5.3 received additional practice with the standard in small groups. The others that grasp the concept received extension activities. I reviewed my SMART goals and looked at the activities aligned with the goals to measure my student’s performance over the course of unit 3 and my Instructional Data was met because the student’s showed signs of understanding the standard. This is determined by observation, guided and independent practice. In all, research-based instructional strategies are essential in today’s education environment as they provide teachers with effective methods to engage learners and promote

growth. By including strategies such as scaffolding and cooperative learning into my lesson plans, I create a classroom environment that fosters meaningful learning, motivated students, and
academic growth.
