Perspective on Race, Ethnicity, and Culture
Everybody has a variety of identities that influence their experiences in life, how they view the world, and how other people view them. The opportunities and difficulties we encounter at work are shaped by the intersections of our gender, race, ethnicity, and culture. In the video Trouble in Rocky Ridge (Walden University, 2021) the teacher was raised in a predominantly white neighborhood that eventually became 30% African American. Over time, her school saw an increase in the integration of different ethnic groups. As the K-12 public school student population grows significantly more diverse, schools remain divided along racial, ethnic, and economic lines throughout the U.S. (Office U.S.G.A, 2022). The video continued by talking about an incident that took place in the neighborhood. A male African American who was unarmed was shot. A demonstration ensued, and many African American students missed class the next day as they processed the tragedy that befell their race. Students and coworkers start to voice their concerns about the situation and show concern for their safety. At this point, the teacher starts to feel a need to support those around her, but she is not sure how to bring up the subject tactfully.
Who would you respond to first, is the question being asked. As an educator if placed in such situations my thinking would be in this case, the instructor has two options: she can talk to her students about the issue without addressing administration, or she can speak with them to find out what she can talk about and what should she keep to herself. A good point of emphasis for a cohesive relationship between teachers and admin is the importance of setting up effective communication channels (Teachers-Administrators, 2021). To avoid adopting a biased viewpoint, if I were in this situation, I would start by gathering as much information as possible about what transpired in the community from reliable sources. Then, in order to discuss the topic

and how to approach it with students, I would talk to colleagues, particularly the social worker, guidance counselors, and administrators and express my views. Even though some people might disagree with what needs to be said or want to ignore the situation, it is crucial for teachers to address these challenging circumstances and consider the needs and challenges of every student in their community. It's time to discuss the matter with the students now that the teacher has addressed her coworkers and the administration. As an educator I am responsible for the students I teach, and their well-being is important to me. To show my students I care during morning meetings I would inform my students that in life tragedies will occur but how we deal and face them with courage and positivity makes us resilient. I will not come up bluntly to the class to discuss the incident that happened in the community. This is an effort to avoid biased perspective from students that may offend or hurt another student’s feelings. Instead, as a teacher I would respond
by doing a check-in with each of my students privately asking them how they felt about the situation at my teacher’s table. In my opinion, establishing a safe space in the classroom during one-on-one conversations will enable the student to receive the individualized support they require.
There are parallels between this scenario and my educational environment.
In the community surrounding our school, white people predominate. There is an all-time high in gun violence in one neighborhood. One of our African American fifth graders from this neighborhood lost his brother to gun violence during the previous academic year. The unfortunate thing is that this student saw it happen. Our school was rocked by this tragedy, as students returned and filled the hallways with graphic accounts of what had happened that evening. Teachers were observed engaging in gossip regarding the circumstances, with one
