Connecting with families in a school community is important because it takes a village to support academic or behavioral needs inside the classroom. In our building, the school connects with families in several different ways. My mentor is a part of family engagement and provided some insightful information on other ways we connect with families that I wasn’t aware of. To start, the school connects with families by hosting several family engagement events, parent/teacher conferences, newsletters, a Facebook page, and weekly messages that the administration sends to families on upcoming events or exciting things happening inside our building. With our Facebook page, families are encouraged to like the page to see photos of events or learning that is happening throughout the day. Another thing I learned from my mentor is that families are encouraged to come and help volunteer in the building or attend site council meetings. I honestly didn’t know we had a site counsel until last week. When the community helps support, it has a positive impact on the learning environment. Students are excited to have their work displayed on our Facebook page. When students do not see their work or families involved, it negatively impacts their learning and leads to additional behaviors. One of the challenges we face is not having a translator available when families need to speak with someone immediately. We have a translation service to call, but some families become impatient when waiting for the translator to answer the call. Another challenge faced is when there are difficult conversations that must be made, and the family isn’t open to ideas to help support their student academically or behaviorally. The other challenge with engaging with the community is families not following building expectations and not understanding why they cannot go on certain field trips or daily events that require prior approval or background checks. One way my mentor mentioned ways to enhance the collaboration is understanding the cultural background of the families that we serve. Teachers must build a positive relationship with the student and the family. The first few meetings should be positive or send notes home for parents to know how their child is performing academically or behaviorally before difficult phone calls or parent meetings are
