Art Creation – photography For this paper, I am going to compare and contrast two photos. One is an image by Ansel Adams, and the second is a photo that I took that was inspired by Ansel Adams. So, who was Ansel Adams? Ansel Adams was an American Landscape photographer who was known for his black-and-white photos that pictured the untainted American West. He was also an environmentalist who actively worked to help preserve America's wild nature (About Ansel Adams - the Ansel Adams Gallery, 2023). Adams was influenced by Alfred Stieglitz a New York photographer. Adams said that Steiglitz taught him that art is the affirmation of life (Inspiration and Influence: The Visions of Ansel Adams; essay by Drew Heath Johnson. n.d.). Ansel Adams captured Yosemite's majestic Bridalveil Fall, including the curling mist that inspired its Native American name pohono, meaning “puff of wind”. This is the photo that I used as inspiration for my photo for this paper. Ansel Adams's photo style used his eleven-zone system. The image is divided into eleven zones using Ansel Adams' zone system, which includes pure black and white, along with nine shades of gray. Adams, who used black-and-white negative film for his photographs, made sure to expose the scene's darkest areas. In doing so, he avoided having the entire image be black. For the shades of gray to adhere to his zone system, he made sure to modify the dark and light areas of his shot when developing the photo paper. The picture below shows the use of the eleven-zone system. This photo was taken around 1927 with a Korona view camera. Ansel Adams used visualization to that his photos. Before beginning to photograph the topic, one must first consciously visualize the final photographic image in their mind. We can relate to the subject, but we also learn that it has the potential to be an expressive image.

Something I noticed while looking at Ansel Adams photos is that he seems to place the main image in the center and more in the far background with dark symmetry around the main subject in the foreground. That is what I try to do with my photo to mimic how I see his photo. The sky in his phots always seem to be very high in the image and the photo feel like they are taken from a far and lower to the ground. Some of his image I feel like is might have been near the ground with the camera pointed more up. When I saw the cloud it reminded me of the water fall mist, so I tried to make that the focus
