Draft 1 Rubric Table A is the rubric I will use to grade your 1 st draft. Table B shows the details for the 7 items in the rubric. - When you get your grade & feedback, look at the detailed descriptions in Table B of the items for which you got a low score. - Ask me if you have any questions. Simple and specific questions can be emailed to me. - I won’t review the whole essay again, so ask about a certain part that you are not sure about. o E.g. Can you check my thesis statement to see if my argument is persuasive? o E.g. I think I fixed my citation errors. Can you help me check my in-text citations? - The best way I can help you with a more complicated issue is to come to the office hour; then we can look at your essay together, and I can suggest changes. B) 1 st Draft Checklist Summary Introduction & conclusion INTRODUCTION - an interesting hook and enough background information in general to specific order - a complete thesis statement as the last sentence CONCLUSION - introduced with a signal phrase - no new information or ideas from sources - paraphrased thesis - concluding remark B Body paragraph 1 - topic sentence expressing the opposing view - relevant supporting reason - relevant quoted evidence - concession and rebuttal included Body paragraphs 2 & 3 - topic sentences expressing the writer’s view & reasons - 2 relevant supporting ideas - relevant quoted evidence - concluding sentences summarizing the paragraphs and linked to thesis Unity and coherence - whole essay clearly organized - all sentences related to the topic and thesis - transitional expressions used to link ideas and individual paragraphs Use of evidence and MLA format - signal phrases used to introduce evidence - evidence in the form of quotations - in-text citations in correct MLA format - all sources used listed in Works Cited - Works Cited in correct MLA format Language - ideas in the essay easy to understand - academic vocabulary with no repetition or unnecessary words or phrases - only 3 rd person used (no I, we, you ) - a variety of sentences (simple, compound, complex) - most sentences grammatically correct
