Isabella Rodriguez Professor Khadir ENC 1102 01 December 2020 Genre Shift Reflection My purpose is to inform the youth of America on the shocking reality of how rampant and widespread gun violence has become in America. The genre I chose is an infographic that communicates concise and shocking facts on gun violence in America. The reason I chose an infographic is because of my audience. For my audience, I chose the youth of America, which consist basically of teenagers and young adults. Nowadays, the youth of America is a fast-paced and busy crowd with a short attention span, and I knew I needed a platform that would catch their eye and is also not too wordy. It would be difficult to appeal to the youth of America with an Op-Ed or article seeing as how these are platforms consisted of wordy paragraphs which honestly would appear boring to youth; therefore, an infographic is the perfect solution. An infographic can help with my purpose to inform the youth of America on gun violence in America with visually enticing features and quick and concise facts. Moreover, I deleted and cut out a large sum of information from my research in Module 3. I left out the specific sum of money the CDC grants in funding for every life lost to gun violence, the effect of the Dickey Amendment on gun violence research funding, the benefits of increased gun violence research funding, the loophole of background checks in the firearm purchase, and the specific methods of gun trafficking and how they go unpunished in America. The reason as to why I omitted this vast amount of information from my infographic in Module 4 is because these were the facts that required an extensive explanation which would have been too wordy for an infographic. I made sure to state facts that were concise yet
still shocking to fulfill my purpose of informing the youth of America on the shocking reality of gun violence in America. I established credibility by citing my sources in APA format in order to prove I am not making up these facts. As for appealing to pathos, I made sure to include a photo of a cartoon young man dead along with the fact that 70,323 American lives have been lost to gun violence alone in 2019 in order to gain sympathy from the audience. As for appealing to logos, I included facts such as 1 in 5 prisoners owning a gun during the time they committed the crime for which they were imprisoned for as well as the fact that 1 in 3 Americans own a gun to show the audience how widespread gun accessibility and violence is in the USA. In my citation of sources, the difference between Module 3 and 4 is the shift from MLA format to APA format, and I did not utilize hyperlinks in Module 4. Typically, in past projects I used MLA format, but for my infographic I figured APA format fit best seeing as how it reveals the year the source is from to show my information is valid and recent. Moreover, I included different design choices in my infographic than my past projects. In Module 2, it was an annotated bibliography which consisted of a Prezi with visual elements and shapes that conveyed an American theme, but still maintained a serious tone. I used squares instead of circles to subconsciously establish a serious tone. In Module 3, I did a web article and I mainly utilized black and white pictures and subtitles to present a serious and formal tone to persuade Congress. In my infographic, however, I included visual background of blue, red, and gray in order to make the information “pop” and still establish an American element in relation to my topic in order to reach out to the youth of America. Also, I included small cartoon pictures for each fact to aid in visually appealing my audience. All these genres differed in visual elements and content, but all were designed to fulfill my purpose in persuading or informing my audience on gun violence in America.
