1. Discuss how social relations influence the understanding of time. The Hutterites believe that history is an important dimension for the presence of God. They do not pay attention to the dates of the event but rather the steps in which the development of the church of God occurred. They claim that the worldly date holds virtually no value for them compared to the fact that “God broke into history” (page 3). The Hutterites say that secular time has both a beginning and an end because it is the measure of events that take place on Earth and it applies to all material objects. However, history represents eternity because it is a dimension of secular time. On Sunday, everyone is reminded that God’s time is measured by eternity. Everyone goes to Sunday service just at different times. The day before, everyone gets prepared for Sunday service, the schoolhouse is scrubbed by the unmarried girls, everyone bathes, hair is combed, beards are trimmed, and the women roll buns. There's even a weekly pattern for the food. The Hutterites perform their secular activities in blocks that are reserved for a specific activity. They do not hurry their activities but rather try to finish within the time that is assigned to them. Once they have finished their task they do not savor the moment, they move on to the next activity. It applies to meals, work, and everyday life. It keeps them busy throughout the day. Furthermore, the bell is rung to announce the rising time, most of the meals, to call the women to work, to announce a wedding shivaree, or to cope with an emergency. It is only rung for the “worldly” events that involve large segments of the colony or if it is unnecessary to ring the bell. For example, it is not rung for the meal service after church because the colony is already in one place. It would be a waste of time to ring the bell. - It revolves around religion (that’s what structure their time patterns and structure patterns)
- Their theology explains that there's a certain timing for each activity - Their religion gives them their correct time pattern, in other words how their day will be divided - They consider their mortal life, their time on Earth secular time, which is finite - Their immortal time is their time after death because it is their time with god, which is infinite - There's a lot of time reserved for eating (they are all able to get together and spend time with each other) - They look forward to aging because they are closer to death (they will be closer to god) - They grow closer to their sacred time with god as they grow older; their time with god is infinite but their time on Earth has a beginning and end 2. Discuss how identity or culture is related to the social construction of time. Culture is related to the social construction of time. In Hutterite’s culture, their lives revolve around specific schedules that are dictated by their culture or the bell. For example, the bell rings to wake everyone up for their morning supper. However, it does not ring for Sunday service because it is already expected of everyone to go to the Church on Sunday. The day before Sunday, everyone prepares for Sunday. They clean themselves, clean their houses, and the Church. The weekly pattern of activity leads up to Sunday, which, depending on how religious each colony is, is dedicated to secular time. On Monday, the women wash their clothes at the community house. Every colony tried to wash their floors every day but if not then they do it every Tuesday and Friday. During the summer the school girls pick peas for Tuesday morning,
