After reviewing the suggestions and edits provided by ChatGPT, it was clear that my essay was lacking a clear structure and supporting information. I think ChatGPT did a great job at noticing the surface level issues within my essay. For example it pointed out that my conclusion mentioned the difficulties of leaving Scientology, but did not really expand on it. So I took note of it and expanded on my response. I do feel that ChatGPT is limited in the sense it fails to provide a deeper understanding of the subjects. It lacks the ability to think critically, attempt to avoid bias, or take ethics into consideration. As a result, the information provided by ChatGPT might not be accurate or may be insensitive. Ultimately, ChatGPT will never be able to go in depth with its information or draw conclusions with the same capabilities as humans. Scientology: The Cult The Church of Scientology, known for its high-profile celebrity members, has its roots in the teachings of L. Ron Hubbard. Although the cult is known for its large number of members who have reached celebrity status, such as Tom Cruise, John Travolta, Elizabeth Moss, Katie Holmes, and the list goes on. Discovered by L. Ron Hubbard post World War II, in 1950 he went on to release his first of many books under the guise of self-help. Beginning his career as a science fiction writer, Hubbard released a slew of stories for magazines, including “Terra Incognita: The Mind” for a magazine known as Amazing Science Fiction. His first novel was titled Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health . Shortly after he began gaining a bit of popularity, some began to follow his work, including John Campbell the editor of the magazine. It did not take long for Dianetics organizations to open up across the United States of America. The Church of Scientology proclaims its purpose as the transformation of individual lives and the world. Hubbard envisioned a "civilization without insanity, without criminals and without war, where the able can prosper and honest beings can have rights, and where man is free to rise to greater heights”. Hubbard's vision attracted followers by tapping into people's insecurities and emotional turmoil, promising them a "clear" state of high mental development. Through his “newfound” religion and mental health programs, Hubbard claimed he could help people achieve personal perfection. Claiming that he can help his members reach “'the optimum brain,’" modeled on ‘the optimum computing machine.’ Hinting that his readers might personally acquire an optimum brain, he said, ‘modified by viewpoint and educational data, it should be always right, its answers never wrong’” (Bainbridge 129). By preying on people’s insecurities and emotional turmoils, Hubbard recruited his members on the promise of reaching a “clear” status. The members would then have to work their way through the 5 levels; communications release, problems release, relief release, freedom release, and ability release. The lowest level of auditing in Scientology consists of objective processes. The purpose of these drills is "to get the preclear more in touch with his environment (reality)". But when it comes time to go clear and once a member has worked their way through all the levels he must travel to one of the Advanced Organizations. However, reaching the coveted "clear" status required a journey to one of the three Advanced Organizations, located in the United States (Los Angeles),
Britain (East Grinstead, Sussex), and Denmark (Copenhagen). This isolation from society entrapped members in the Church's systems. Leaving the Church of Scientology is far from easy. The properties owned by the church are heavily guarded, and attempting to flee can result in harsh punishment. Members are often subjected to manual labor and extensive spiritual work, effectively brainwashing them and keeping them within the organization for more than a decade. The most obvious consequence of leaving the Scientology community is being shunned by the members. Current members of Scientology cannot remain in contact with someone who has left the organization. Forcing those who want to leave the organization to leave behind long-time friends or family members who are still active. Some experience physical abuse, while others face legal pressures, including destroying evidence and waging legal battles against ex-members. According to the special “Inside Scientology '' reported by Rolling Stone, former members have said they had to sign drawn out affidavits in order to leave with hopes of discrediting them if they were to speak out against them. Some were subjected to physical beatings and others felt the heat through legal pressures. Whether it meant destroying evidence to hurt any cases levied against them or waging legal battles against their ex-members. In conclusion, the Church of Scientology, founded by L. Ron Hubbard, is a controversial organization known for its celebrity members and unconventional beliefs. Hubbard's vision of a utopian society has drawn followers into the Church, but leaving it can be a challenging and sometimes punitive experience, illustrating the control exerted by the organization.
