Part 1
1.
Define the term Lied.
A German song composed for solo voice and piano accompaniment, typically during the
Romantic era, is referred to as a lied.
2.
Who composed over 600 Lieder during his career?
Composer Franz Peter Schubert, who lived in the 19th century, is credited with creating the
Lieder form with more than 600 pieces.
3.
Define Program Music and give an example.
Program music is often defined as music that is intended to inspire certain feelings or feelings
related to specific events. Unlike absolute music, which lacks a narrative or subject to portray, it
typically possesses a powerful melodic story. Franz Liszt's "Concerto No. 1" or Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart's "Symphony in D" are two examples of program music.
4.
Define Absolute Music.
Absolute music, as mentioned in response to question #3, is music that has no backstory or
narrative. Simply put, it's music or noise made to play an instrument. The notes that are being
played have no significance with a narrative of any kind.
5.
Who developed the Music Drama? Give some examples of Music Dramas.
The first composer to have his compositions classified as musical dramas was Wilhelm Richard
Wagner. The man in question was highly theoretical, crafting writings that reinterpreted "opera"
as "musical dramas." You may classify the majority of his compositions as musical dramas in

that context. Wagner wrote two musical dramas: "Parsifal" and "Ride of the Valkyries".
6.
Which composer developed the Symphonic Poem?
The symphonic poem was created by composer Franz Liszt, although Richard Strauss was
largely responsible for its rise in popularity.
7.
Name at least four operas by Giuseppe Verdi.
Giuseppe Verdi wrote four operas: "Aida" (1871), "Don Carlos" (1867), "Otello" (1887), and
"Falstaff" (1893).
8.
What instrument did Clara Schumann play?
Clara Schumann played the piano, and violin, and used her voice to sing.
9.
Name at least two genres that Frédéric Chopin developed for the piano.
My understanding is that Chopin created two piano genres: nocturnes and instrumental ballads.
10. Name a piece of music that displays the nationalism of the composer.
I believe that nationalism is best exemplified by Richard Wagner and his musical opera "The
Ring of the Nibelung". To give German influence authority over opera, he revised it, eliminating
Italian influence. There's no becoming more nationalistic than that, considering his operas were
linked to Nazism.

Which type of program best describes The Moldau? Explain?
The software kind that most aptly represents "The Moldau" is option C, which is graphic and
shows real-life occurrences or locations. This is because the piece is a single movement of a
longer symphonic poem about the Moldau, a river that originates in the Bohemian forest and
flows into Prague. This isn't philosophical or literary.
