1.
Identify your chosen artifact.
The artifact I have chosen is the television show Supernatural.
2.
Describe the artifact in detail using any applicable senses mentioned in the
overview.
Supernatural is a tv series that first aired in 2005 and was created by Eric Kripke. That show is
about two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, that protect the world for all supernatural forces.
The show is set mostly in Kansas where the brothers grew up, however that fight “bad guys” all
over the United states. Within the show is a play list of old rock songs, such as the theme song
Carry on my wayward son by the band Kansas. The show has ran on the CW network for 15 years
and it will air its last episode this spring.
3.
What are the elements of the artifact that you believe are most important to how
you experience it? Does the choice of medium impact your experience?
The elements of the show that I believe is that most important is the fight between good and evil,
and how family is forever. There is a quote within the show that says “family don’t end with blood.”
And the show has done an awesome job of proving that quote. In the fight between good and evil
the boys, the good guys, always win. The choice of medium impacts my experiences with the show
very much. It is why this show has such a great fan base and it is why I love it.
4.
State your opinion on what you believe is the purpose of this artifact and the
success of the creator in achieving the purpose.
I believe the purpose of this artifact is show people the importance of family and friends and
knowing that no matter who you are or what you have done good will always win in the end, even
though the journey to get there is rough. If Eric Kripke’s purpose was to create a “supernatural
Family” then he has completely surpassed it.
5.
Discuss how the artifact reflects the culture (or context) in which it exists. Be sure
to address what aspects of culture have relevance for this artifact: politics, history, religion, social
perceptions, technology, media, education, and so on. In other words, how do the artifact and its
culture interrelate?
The show reflects the culture of religion, myths, history, and cryptozoology. Within the show there
are many creatures that may or may not exists within the world. These different creatures such as,
Angels, Demons, Werewolves, Vampires, demigods, etc. are all parts of different cultures and
things that they may believe as well as their history.
