The two cultural works that caught my attention are a signed letter carried by Charles
Lindbergh from New York to Paris during the first non-stop solo transatlantic flight (

) and a hand-colored political print from 1861
with the subject being the preservation of the United States and the southern states secession
(
The Eagle's nest The Union!
). The letter from Charles Lindbergh caught my attention because
I’ve always found individuals who are willing to take great risks to succeed and push the abilities
of humans to another level to be very inspiring and worthy of remembrance and praise. The
political print caught my attention because I have always been fascinated by the Civil War period
and the events and culture that led to so many American lives being destroyed by a war between
the states.
The letter from Charles Lindbergh reflects the time when aviation history was being
made and the push by aviators to show their personal abilities and the abilities of their aircraft
was becoming a priority in the United States. People were seeing the advancement in technology
of the ability to travel by air in a method much faster than was ever known before. The solo
flight by Lindbergh from New York to Paris and the letter he sent from Paris showed he had
completed the flight, meaning this was not only possible, but had been accomplished. This letter
represents the drive within humanity to continue to advance and I believe, the American spirit to
push forward in all areas and advance to be the best at all things. Lindbergh’s letter is a symbol
of the ability of a person who has a willingness to take a great risk for a great reward and achieve
a place in history forever.
The political print shows the feelings felt by many Americans during the 1860s after the
secession by southern states from the Union. As depicted in the print, many Americans saw the
people, especially those who had been members of the United States Congress before secession,
