When discussing education, one must first understand inclusive school culture. Hammond refers to three levels of culture that are considered to be software for the brain’s hardware (Hammond, 2015). Define and give an example of each as it would pertain to a classroom setting. Describe how you would create a culturally responsive classroom culture. The three levels of culture are the following: Surface- this level is observable such as food, dress, music and holidays. Has a low emotional charge so changes do not create anxiety in a person or group Shallow- the unspoken rules around everyday social interactions, rapport with others. This cultural level has strong emotion. Deep- this level is the unconscious assumptions of the worldview. This culture level has an intense emotional charge Classroom setting: Surface- an example used in the classroom would be to celebrate the national holidays, as majority of my students are African American and have similar beliefs in all. However, I did have a student that was Jehovah Witness which don’t believe in holidays so out of respect for his cultural I have that child go to another room to play games or something fun like extra recess time so that student does feel left out I never found it fair to give the students work to keep them busy but instead go have some fun. Also in my social studies unit I cover a topic about holidays/celebrations around the world. In this unit it covers how other cultures celebrate traditions/holiday and this is always a fun unit because we get to try food, desserts, clothing etc. so my students become knowledgeable about other cultures and their traditions. Shallow- my understanding with this level of culture in classroom is respecting boundaries, for example how you interact with students and families. What comes to mind is how you interact with students in the morning, I have the option for high five, hug, or handshake this way it gives students autonomy of how they greet you. Deep- as a kindergarten teacher I feel that deep level is rooted in this grade. Students are learning and understanding how to understand the world, being model citizens. This culture level in kindergarten students are learning how to be social, routine of a classroom, and sharing/ turn taking. So for me this is ongoing learning throughout the school year but with an emphasis in the first 6 weeks of school to understand school culture. Reference: Hammond, Z. (2015).
