The purpose of this essay is to describe how I as an NCO will prevent SHARP
incidents from occurring within my squad. As well as going into detail about how and
why we as Soldiers can make the change that everyone needs and wants in our Army.
Firstly, I would like to start off by including the statistic of SHARP incidents that
have occurred in the army for the FY2022 “The Department received a total of 8,942
reports of sexual assault in FY22, which is an increase of 76 reports over the 8,866
received in Fiscal Year 2021. Of the 8,942 reports of sexual assault, 5,941 were
Unrestricted and 3,001 were restricted Reports at the end of the year.”

Reports
. From the information gather we know that the quote “Not in my army” is far
from what it is meant to be. Although the reports do not show a drastic change it still
goes to show that we need to work harder as a team to educate and protect our
Soldiers.
For this reason, I believe us as NCO’s can implement new ways of teaching
SHARP classes , like active learning, peer teaching, and lasty open ended discussions.
By us implementing these new ways of teaching we can interpret our Soldier’s grasp on
this subject and find solution to the new and upcoming problems they see within our
units . Also making sure Soldiers have resources readily available like SHARP reps
point of contact or even having flyers made by them in the hallways or the bathroom
within the unit areas of operation to include the barracks. However, progress, such as
increased reporting and increased awareness, highlight that SHARP is not inherently
broken. Instead, it must evolve in its educational focus to have greater results in the
reduction of sexual assault and harassment incidents in the future.

Knowing what to look for is a major factor in the events of SHARP. In most cases of
Sexual assault and sexual harassment the situations start off as something so small
most people tend to brush past and not make a big deal until it is. I would also like to
include Soldiers meeting with the SHARP representatives and making that connection
with those people who they are supposed to confine in.
In conclusion, implementing these types of trainings would be taking just one
step forward towards bettering our future Army to help put an end to sexual harassment
and sexual assault . Let’s make “Not in my Army” a true statement and let us be able to
say it with pride. I will be starting with my squad.
