10.
P
Being a reflective practitioner for your students so you can always be knowledgeable to
help them (Powell, Sara Davis. Your Introduction to Education: Explorations in
Teaching. Pg.18, Pearson Education, Inc., 2019.)
Now, put a star at the beginning of the ones you feel you already have. Put a “P” sign at the
beginning of the ones you would like to work on. What kind of evidence you can use to show
you have these qualities?
Looking at these qualities as a whole I believe I practice these methods in my day-to-day as well
as most of these qualities I have as a person. As a person, I've been trying to work on myself
mentally because I didn't have the best upbringing and it shows in how I act at times because I’m
a very non-trusting and cautious person. For example, the chapter states “ Our classrooms can be
respectful environments that can promote learning, or not” (Powell, Sara Davis. Your
Introduction to Education: Explorations in Teaching. Pg.17, Pearson Education, Inc., 2019.).
This statement stood out to me because I’ve seen the consequences of students not respecting
their teacher or the classroom due to being taught in a public school setting. The students would
verbally rebel against teachers and even sometimes destroy teacher’s belongings in the
classroom just to get a rise out of the teacher. Due to seeing that happen to teachers I’ve
practiced the quality of earning the respect of students I’d teach or read to when I was in middle
school but have also done my best to listen to the children. I’ve also had time to research and
study Social Emotional Learning during my internship with Akron Public Schools at the
downtown building the summer before my senior year of High School.
Another quality I highly value as an aspiring teacher is compassion and empathy for my students.
Children are very sensitive especially when growing up and going through puberty. If teachers
are a little more empathetic towards their students' emotions it could help students feel more
comfortable and in turn, would improve students' grades. A statement in the chapter that spoke to
me was “ An effective teacher can help students overcome some of the negative circumstances in
their lives and positively impact student learning.” (Powell, Sara Davis. Your Introduction to
Education: Explorations in Teaching. Pg.25, Pearson Education, Inc., 2019.) Just like when I was
in kindergarten I was diagnosed with Legg Calve Perthes Disease and I had to have two surgeries
when I was in 1st and 2nd grade putting screws in and out of my hip. During that time with the
surgeries, I was very depressed because I felt a burden to my family but also I felt hopeless in
school because I was heavily bullied for having a cane and waddling. I however had this
amazing teacher during 2nd grade that was just a saving Grace for me because she would always
check up and pay special attention to me because of the bully and I owe her the biggest hug. It’s
been teachers like her and a few others that I’ve come to appreciate because they saved me in a
way and I want my future students to possibly feel safe with me and hopefully feel as though I
made a difference in their lives.
Finally, I have many qualities of a compassionate and kind teacher because I’ve had many
experiences that have made me become the person I am and I’m grateful for the teachers who’ve
been there for me during some of the hardest times. That’s exactly why I want to become a
teacher. My students can remember for a lifetime and feel as though I tried to make a difference
in their lives.
