Compassion 1 Just Be Compassionate Vicky L. Primrose SWK481 Campbellsville University
Compassion 2 Everyone Is Different In the video “Portrait of Addiction” hosted by Bill Moyers, we see nine different individuals who have experienced addiction at extreme levels. From starting in high school to being a police officer. Addiction controls their lives in so many ways but all experiencing the addiction consuming them. We learn that you can be from the classiest neighborhood or from the street’s addiction has no bias. We watch the battle each person suffered when realizing they are an addict and how they fight to leave the addiction behind. Compassion “Portrait of Addiction” has taught me compassion, though I have always had compassion for people stuck in the ropes of addiction I believe I lacked the full capacity of compassion. As I watched each person talk about their story you start to lose the stigma of who exactly can be a victim to the disease. Hearing the different stories from each person really sets a perspective on how easy it is to get consumed with drugs, alcohol, or etc. You do not have to suffer from a traumatizing up bringing, or other stigmas associated with addiction. You can be anyone a police officer, a mom, someone who lives in a million-dollar neighborhood, or you could be someone who comes from a poor background and traumatizing circumstances. The issue is I believe we all turn an eye or forget anybody at any time can become addicted to substance and suffer tremendously. It is important in any career that we show compassion, however, when it comes to addiction recovery, I believe that compassion for everyone should be the highest priority. Understanding each story carefully and the journey they are on to start a new life without the chains of addiction. I believe this video helped me see the suffering and pain behind each person that fought with addiction and the major differences each had. Whether they woke up needing
Compassion 3 their next fix or watched the clock continuously to the hour they could have their next drink. In this video I learned so many different factors at play each person had that contributed to their addiction such as socially inclined, work related, or generational effects. To have a better understanding of different individuals and compassion will help me one day when facing many different personalities in a social work career. The Difference Between Men and Women Though there is quite a stigma between men and women abusers, each individual person is different. Stigmas associated with gender roles are prevalent within society when it comes to addiction. In the text book “Addiction Treatment : A Strengths Perspective” it states that in a survey National Household Survey on Drug Use and Health (NHSDUH) “that males 12 years or older were more likely to report current illicit drug use than females”(pg.476). All throughout this particular chapter you see the many statistics based around men being more likely to use any substance then women. You also find that men are more likely to not seek out treatment opposed to women. However, to note that women that are suffering from addictions are identified as “deviant and promiscuous, primarily because of their inability to fulfill their gender role as mothers and caretakers” (Wormer and Davis 2018). However, men are less likely to seek out treatment due to the feeling shame or embarrassment because of the stigma of men are meant to be the household provider, the masculine role they are left to have no options and deal with their own problems. A lot of issues stem from addiction with gender role expectations. A lot of women use alcohol or drugs to gain their voice in a relationship or in any situation that women feel their voices can not be heard due to the stigma of a gender role that women are not treated as equally to men. Unfortunately a good amount of women who are addicted are typically mothers. Mothers are placed to carry the household but not in the same stance of a man who financially carries the
