Cultural Artifacts
My first selection is
The Four Horsemen, from The Apocalypse
by Albrecht Durer. Created
during the German Renaissance in 1498, using woodcut. It measures 15.25" inches x 11.5" and is
in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This piece depicts the end of the mortal world
as described in the Bible's book of Revelation. My second selection is Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's
"Love Theme" from Romeo and Juliet
. A fantasy overture from 1880, at the end of the
Romantic Era. This rendition is performed by The London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted
by Sir Adrian Boult.
Common Theme
The common theme between both works is love through conflict. Durer's woodcut offers
elements that signify love amongst the chaos and sweeping death, the most obvious being the
angel keeping a close watch as the tragedy unfolds. Soaring close to provide protection or
supervision. Additionally, the rays of light originating from the top left signifying the presence of
Heaven. A place where endless love awaits those who have earned their place. Tchaikovsky's
musical composition has set a precedent for what "love" sounds like. Musical elements wrap
around each other in a snake-like nature, expressing lust and longing. The main "love theme"
expresses affection and passion. All of this takes place between members of feuding families,
ultimately causing the untimely death of Romeo and Juliet. The differences in these works speak
volumes to the power of love. The apocalypse acting as a cleansing, offering a new beginning
rooted in love. Where Romeo and Juliet's love was forbidden, and death is where it ended.

Personal Experience
Love is everywhere. Some would say that love gives life meaning. As a father, husband and son,
there is no shortage of the amount of love needed or given. The importance of encouraging and
maintaining love through pain and conflict, has never been more important. Our country is so
polarized in every facet, that hate seems to be rearing its ugly head around every corner. I am not
a religious man, but I do believe in kindnesss.
Profession
The love through conflict theme applies to many professions. As an Army Medic, I provided
medical care in both humanitarian and during combat operations. The bonds that are made in the
worst situations are rooted in love and cemented by that shared experience. The Army, medicine
and any leadership role can benefit from the humanities by understanding human emotion and
drive. Offering perspective into what motivates peers, leaders, and subordinates.
Humanities Resources
My first resource is the essay Then I Saw: The Influence of Albrecht Dürer’s Apocalypse as
Paratext by U-Wen Low from the Religion and the Arts Journal. My second resource is part of
the Bulletin of the City Art of St. Louis titled Illustrations to the Apocalypse by Albrecht Dürer
written by T.T.H. My final resource is the program notes from the New York Philharmonic’s
performance of Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, Overture-Fantasy written by Program
Annotator, James M. Keller. The two resources related to Dürer’s Apocalypse differ in the fact
that the first offers more insight to his influences and inspiration, while the second provides
historical context. The program notes from the New York Philharmonic offer some history on
