HUM 102 Module Five Project Draft Template Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Part One: Choose the Creative Works Already drafted in Modules Two and Four Part Two: Self and Society Already drafted in Module Four Part Three: Identity and the Humanities 1. Describe the relationship between the humanities and self-identity. Humanities are intended to help us learn more about ourselves from our own experiences and the experiences of others. In doing so the humanities assist us in finding our likes and dislikes. For instance, someone who plays the piano may identify as a musician, or someone who has read every Harry Potter book at least 3 times may identify as a Potterhead. When considering the works chosen, one may identify as having had a rough childhood. 2. Describe sociocultural factors that influence identity construction. Sociocultural factors can play a huge part in our identity construction. From the religion that we were raised in or even how we were raised at home. Take into consideration that you’re a young girl who was raised with strict conservative and religious values, and you were a kid who struggled with your sexuality. This may make your home life and your school life harder to navigate through. 3. Explain how different humanities subject areas can be used to understand one's identity. The humanities should make each of us feel closer to each other. We all experience life differently but have each encountered different situations in life that make us feel the same type of emotions, anger, sadness happiness, and so on. Such as the book Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen, I read the book many years ago, but it always sticks with me because it tells the story of a young girl who struggles with interpersonal family relationships and the struggles of addiction. This example would fall under the literary art category of the humanities. But this book can also connect to the K-12 (film) in the transition into the class fight scene in the film. The primary character Cry Baby goes to call her mom to ask her what she should do about Kelly, the girl who has been bullying her from the beginning. When she calls her mom, the mom is pictured passed out on the floor surrounded by liquor bottles. Both works portray a story of having had a rough upbringing. 4. Explain how diverse perspectives influence self-concept. Diverse perspectives help to influence self-concept by providing different viewpoints on a topic and expanding our perspective on it. I will use the example of sexual identity. As a Christian, I hold the viewpoint that God made you perfect just the way you are. Throughout the course, I have seen several discussion posts and even myself written about this topic to try to expand my viewpoint on this subject. In response to my Empathy through the Arts discussion post from Felix Jordan they write about their experiences of being non-binary and gender identity. After reading their response and seeing that we both struggle with body issues but of a different kind it softens my heart for people that are undergoing transition. Or using proper pronouns for people who do not identify with the standard He/Her Him/She pronouns.
