For the IIP Project, I will be covering the topic of Jamestown and 1619 for fourth-grade students. In this
unit, students will be learning about the first permanent English Colony that was established in
Jamestown. A few other topics included in this unit will be the Charters of the Virginia Company, starving
time, and colonization. Students will be given a chance to explore this topic through other subjects such
as math and reading. When educators combine critical thinking across subject areas this is considered a
Multidisciplinary Integrated Curriculum. Drake and Burns (2004, as cited in Kneen, et al., 2020) identify
three categories of integrated curriculum: • multidisciplinary (the focus is on the disciplines, but using
themes as a connection between them.) During this unit, I will be using a few strategies to bring
Jamestown and other subjects together. One opportunity I will use for integration is during the math
lesson. Students will be learning about line graphs and will complete an activity about Jamestown. They
will have to create a line graph using the population data from 1607 to 1611 and answer follow-up
questions. Another opportunity to be used will be during reading instruction. Students will be comparing
and contrasting informational and literary texts about history. They will use the platform Get Epic to
complete reading stations. As I think about the IIP Project and all the things that will go into it, one
scripture comes to mind. 2 Timothy 2:15 states, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman
that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” One key thing to being successful is
to study. As we all are working on our projects, it will require us to do some extreme studying and do
more than the basics. There are so many components to be included that we need to be able to present
successfully. This relates to us in our biblical worldview when we are studying deep in our word to gain
wisdom from God. To grow our relationships with the Lord and build our faith we must study the word.
