Week 8 Dialogue
During this course, we have learned a lot of different skills to use while
counseling others.
I believe that all the skills we have learned are important since every client is
unique.
All the skills need to be used during sessions depending on what works best for the
client.
I know that when it comes to self-disclosure, I will use all three approaches depending on
the need of the client. Personal identification, normalization, and reactive response.
All three of
these will work during a session.
One of the three approaches will work during a session with a
client (
Bottrill, S., Pistrang, N., Barker, C., & Worrell, M. 2010).
When it comes to wanting to be a drug counselor, I believe that cognitive behavioral
therapy is the approach that is important in counseling substance use and addiction. This will
help in the recognition of past issues (abuse, neglect, family, friends, environment)
that have led
to the client’s addiction and the way that they think. Plus, I want to have the Lord active in my
counseling approach. I know that as a Christian, I need to lead non-believers, or believers that
are stuck in sinful nature to be reborn into Christ (saved). I will lean on the Lord to give me the
words and guidance I need to guide my clients into a relationship with Him. Scripture says, “If
any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraided not;
and it shall be given him”(James 1:5 KJV).
To help them build their relationship with the Lord
and learn to depend on and lean on Him in their recovery (Clinton, T.E., Ohlschlager, G, E.,
2002).
I still believe that every struggle, hurdle, hurt, loss, and being in foster care has made me
who I am.
As well as lead me to the Lord.
I believe that we must go through something or
several things to have the yearning to want something different. Plus, the realization that we must
have something bigger than ourselves to accomplish it.
It is the Lord’s way of trying to get your
attention to lean on Him and build a relationship with Him.
Coming to the realization that we
cannot do it alone. We need God for guidance and to get rid of the feeling of loneliness and to
feel like we are whole and have a purpose.
The theories and skills that we have learned have taught me that all clients are unique and
different.
That one approach might work with one client and not another one. Having knowledge
of the different approaches and skills and practicing them will help me reach more clients than
just staying focused on a handful of them. Especially when the approach does not seem to be
helping or reaching the client and their needs
The more clients that I can reach and help in my
profession as a drug counselor and Christian the better.
