Seminar 7 Worksheet: Homeric Hymn to Apollo
The goal of the seminar worksheets is to allow students to reflect and expand on concepts about Greco-Roman mythology, while practicing writing skills and the ability to analyze and think critically about a primary source. It is also an opportunity for students to demonstrate their engagement with the course materials and their understanding of the course content for that week. In crafting your responses, you should draw upon lecture materials, seminar material and the primary source readings for the week. You may also draw upon knowledge gained from other courses, your own personal experiences and your own knowledge. Please be sure to cite any direct quotations or paraphrased information from the primary sources, that you use in your responses. Information about citations can be found under the Assignments tab in Contents. During Week 8, we looked Hermes and the Homeric Hymn to Apollo
.
Below are 2 questions which deal with these topics. Please answer one (1)

1.
How does the Homeric Hymn to Apollo
describe his birth? What qualities or characteristics does Apollo have that set him apart from the other gods? In Homeric Hymn to Apollo
his birth is describe as something that was agonizing for Leto
had to travel for days across many mortal lands and places in hopes of finding a place to give birth to Apollo (
Homeric Hymn to Apollo, 1-46).
It’s mentioned that she travelled through hills, mountains, steep places, near seas and cities then finally found sanctuary in
Delos, (
Homeric Hymn to Apollo, 47-88). The qualities Apollo has is almost everything. He possesses such great strength, being a most powerful gods, while also being known as
the far-shooter, a healer and someone mortal men look up to (
Homeric Hymn to Apollo, 225-276). As Apollo is considered a god of good strength and honour, for his ability to excel in everything it only shows how powerful he is considered to be in comparison to his father Zeus but isn’t acknowledged for it by the gods because of their distain for his mother. 2.
In the Homeric Hymn, Apollo is searching for a location for his temple. Discuss his search and the actions he must undertake to create his place of worship. (Please type response here)
