The case study
Racism and the Political Economy of COVID-19: Will We Continue to
Resurrect the Past?
It was utilized for this discussion. The case study, written by Zinzi Bailey
and J. Robin Moon, dives into the health crisis that Covid-19 brought, explicitly focusing on the
Bronx, NY. Bailey and Moon’s point of focus is to illustrate the disparities in areas of color
regarding the treatment and deaths of those inflicted with Covid-19. The article utilizes the
Bronx as a backdrop to showcase the history of racial infrastructure issues and a continuation of
what is referred to as a “devaluation of brown and black lives” (Bailey and Moon, 2020).
Understanding the moral implications and ethical ones in this case study will be the focus of this
discussion.
As with any public policy made, and in the public administration field, there are always
those that will not benefit from everything. But when we think this way, we also allow this to be
applied to negatives. Healthcare is one of those topics that is heavily debated within public
administration. According to Schafritz and Hyde (2017), “Administrative efficiency is supposed
to increase with an increase in specialization.”
The U.S. Government utilized the CDC to
research and combated everything Covid-19 related. The rollout of information was not readily
available, and the resources were not reaching those areas that are considered urban and low-
income. 2/3 of the deaths of Americans from Covid-19 were African-Americans (Pollock, 2020).
Knowing that this was happening and still not supplying these areas with what they needed was
completely unethical on a larger scale.
Covid-19 inequalities were due to race but “are the result of structural racism and social
inequalities embedded within the economic, political, education, health care, criminal justice,
and other systems and social structures in the United States” (Albert et al., 2020, p. 923).
This is
the point that Bailey and Moon attempted to convey in their case study. The pandemic highlights
an infrastructure issue plaguing the minority communities for decades. It took a significant
healthcare crisis for the country to truly see the inequalities that have plagued people of color, in
majorly minority communities. The fact that people of color were dying at higher rates was said
to be because of the many different diseases that are more prominent in minorities, but research
and statistics found that to be false (Albert et al., 2020, p. 922). Why would the government
haphazardly give out incorrect information? It does not only fail at good governance for all
citizens but is an unethical stain on the government’s reputation.
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for
all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life,
godly and dignified in every way. 1 Timothy 2:1-2
