Romantic Era (dates) 1825-1910 Lieder Is also known as an art song. It's a genre that defines romantic music, drama, or poetry—done mainly by one singer and a pianist. It's more of a "mini-opera". In most cases, it is super psychological and emotional. Through-composed Is a type of lieder whereby every stanza has a different music. The music of one stanza is different from the music of the other. Strophic Is a type of a Lieder whereby all the verses or the stanza have the same music. The music of one stanza is similar to the tune of the other. Tone Poem / Symphonic Poem It's a programmatic poem coined by Franz Liszt and contains extramusical ideas such as painting, nature, and play. Programmatic music (define and give an example): Music that tells a story or follows a narrative, often associated with specific extramusical ideas or images. An example of programmatic music is Berlioz's "Symphonie fantastique." Absolute music (define and give an example): Music that is independent of any extramusical narrative or program. An example is Beethoven's Symphony No. 5.
Idée fixe A recurring musical theme or idea representing a specific person, thing, or idea in a composition. An example is Berlioz's use of the idee fixe in "Symphonie fantastique." Nationalistic music reflects a nation's distinctive features, often incorporating folk tunes, dances, or themes. The Mighty Five was A group of Russian composers—Balakirev, Cui, Borodin, Mussorgsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov—who aimed to create distinctly Russian classical music. What happened in 1848 (where did it take place)? There was tons of uprising all over Europe. It typically refers to the Revolutions of 1848, a series of political upheavals throughout Europe.
