Exploring the good and evil of Social Media as it relates to the Political environment in
our society and looking at the advantages and disadvantages of using social media as a
communication tool to effectively inform constituents, lastly, trusting social media as a reliable
tool for fact or fiction.
Like it or not, social media is here to stay
. Studies show that the average internet user
is on social media over 2 hours per day. This is a good indicator of how important social
media is to our daily lives. Why social media matters? Over 90% of adults online have an
account with at least one media platform and I would imagine that the percentage will be
only slightly smaller than 90% that have several accounts
. They market these outlets as must
needs. In dealing within the political arena, if you plan to run for any type of office, local,
state or federal you will need to have at least two outlets because getting your message out is
very important to the success of your campaign. The candidate that hits there
target audience
first, and with most success normally are way ahead the game. With those many being on
social media of at least 2 hours per day globally, politically speaking, one will have to take
note because it begins to impact their behavior and feelings.
(Denice, 2015) The negative part
of that is that some politicians prey on those feelings of fear, or ignorance. With our lives being
as they are, busy and somewhat chaotic we don’t have time to really study the issues. We rely on
others to fill in the blanks of what we really need to know and this is the danger of social media.
Politicians solicit internet usage data to search for the most effective ways to get their
message out, whether it is positive or negative, true or false. If a political candidate wanted
to spread bad press on another candidate social media would be the best avenue for doing so
and
more interesting is the time that it takes for him or her to do a large amount of damage is

minimal. One very little negative post can travel the globe in less than 10 minutes. And as far
as the reader is concerned it’s true because it’s on the internet. Hitting every Twitter,
Facebook, Instagram in less than the time it takes to place one phone call. Lets take a look at
the 2016 United States Presidential election, it was reported and now confirmed that A
foreign power, better known as Russia interfered in our election for President.(Masters,
2018) Several United States security agencies such as Central Intelligence Agency, Federal
Bureau of Investigation and the National Security Agency reported that with high confidence
that the Russian government launched a campaign to manipulate the 2016 Presidentail
elections
. (Masters, 2018) In a January 2017 report, it reported that President Vladimir Putin
ordered the meddling and encouraged secret entities to make sure that President Donald
Trump wins over Hillary Clinton by spreading lies through social media. Social media outlets
are not a great place to find or share credible information. Making the negative messages
appear legitimate through bogus websites and blogs. People go to great lengths to try to make
it appear that what they are posting on their blogs are legit. This is a prime example of how
one candidate suffered and one given a great advantage through social media. Again, this is a
crooked politician’s playground for edited and unedited propaganda. An example of this is if
you have politician A, running against politician B. Politician A is running behind politician
B in the polls a week or so prior to election day. One week before Election Day, politician A
goes on social media and post defamatory information on politician B. Chances are politician
B loses the election because politician B did not have time to respond and what was posted
wasn’t verified by the readers so they assumed the post to be true. These are some of the
negative things about social media needs to be addressed at some point within our political
election arena.
