Question #1 :Using the text on style in the Introduction of RTA ( see pages 30-36) and the discussions on Renaissance and Baroque art in the above-listed pages as guides, explain why Masaccio's The Tribute Money ( fig. 11.1 page 271) and Rembrandt's The Night Watch ( fig.11.18 page 292) are representative of each style. ( 15 points). To be clear, a painting can only be representative of ONE style, so | do not mean you are to explain both styles for each painting. Make sure to identify which style each painting represents. Masaccio's “The Tribute Money” is a Renaissance frescoes style. Renaissance Frescoes style depicts religion or historical scenes as shown in the painting. The painting represents that style because it's known for its naturalistic style, characterized by the usage of perspective and attention to detail, and a realistic portrait of human figures. The painting technique creates depth and three dimensions making the people feel more lifelike. Rembrandt's “The Night Watch” is a Baroque style. Baroque style is a style with intense emotion and attention to detail as is shown in this painting. The painting's unique style is characterized by Rebrandt's uses of light and shadow known as Chiaroscuro. The painting showcases a group of men in a lively scene. The painter's attention to detail shows the realism of the people and their emotions. Question #2: Using the discussions of perspective and chiaroscuro set out in Chapter 1 ( see pp. 59 and 60) as a guide, compare the ways in which Leonardo's The Last Supper ( fig. 11.6) and Rueben's Henry IV Receiving the Portrait of Maria de Medici ( fig. 11.17) achieve depth of space. ( 10 points) Leonardo's “The Last Supper” and Rubens's “Henry IV Receiving The Portrait of Maria de Medici” achieve the depth of space, Rubens's painting creates a sense of depth by gradually reducing the intensity of the colors and details of objects. Leonardo's painting uses a linear perspective of lines in the architecture and the table conveys a vanishing point creating the illusion of depth and distance. Question #3: Provide a A) descriptive analysis, a B) formal analysis and a C) interpretive analysis of the painting 11.16 in your text, Caravaggio's "The Calling of St. Matthew." 3A. Descriptive analysis: “The Calling of St. Matthew” is a painting by Caravaggio the painting shows the biblical scene where Jesus calls Matthew a tax collector to become one of his disciples. The composition is shown by the dramatics brought by the light and shadows, highlighting the moments of the scene. Caravaggios's uses of chiaroscuro create a sense of depth and intensity which makes the viewers of the painting pay attention to the figures. The expressions on the people's faces convey a surprise or disbelief feeling. The painting's attention to detail from the folds on their clothing to the emotions on their faces makes this painting so captivating. 3B. Formal analysis: Based on the visual evidence in “The Calling of St. Matthew,” | can make an argument about the usage of lighting and attention to detail. The use of light, specifically the beam of light shown
