Prior to beginning work on this Discussion forum,
1.
In order to start thinking about history, think of a film, video, image,
song, or piece of music that reminds you of an era or event in the
past.
Consider the film, video, image, song or piece of music
that you selected.
Explain why you chose this piece.
Explain what it tells us about the historical event or era it
depicts.
Think about what you want your classmates to know about
you as a person and your academic, professional, and
personal goals.
2.
Next, start thinking about your work for this course, which will focus
on American history from 1877 to the present. One of the primary
areas of focus in the course will be the examination of political and
civil rights of traditionally disadvantaged groups within American
Society and their struggles for social equity within American society.
To this end, you will select one of the following disadvantaged
groups and examine their experiences throughout the course,
culminating in your Final Paper. (Your group choice does not have to
relate to your chosen historical piece above.)
African Americans
Native Americans/American Indians
Women
Immigrants
Consider which group you have chosen to focus on. Why have you chosen
this group? If you are having trouble deciding, which groups are you most
interested in and why?
Hello Fellow Students,
What do you need to know about me? Well, I am very ambitious, and I push
myself a little too hard sometimes. I am a manager at AutoZone and just got
promoted to Commercial Sales Manager. I recently changed my degree path
from Psychology to Business Administration, and I think it was a good
decision.
I am currently on the Dean’s list and in the Honors Program (I told you I am
too ambitious for my own good, right?) I aim to stay on the Dean’s list and
graduate with honors. I want to become a regional manager and stay in this
position for 5 years while my fiancé and I save. After that I want to become a
mom and pick up a job doing inspections for a VRBO company my friend co-
owns once my child(ren) enter school. I have a very solid plan in my opinion,
but now we wait for the curveballs that life always seems to throw when you
think you have created a solid plan.
One piece of music that reminds me of a significant historical event is
‘Imagine’ by John Lennon. I chose this song because it represents the era of
the 1960s and early 1970s, particularly the counterculture movement and
the quest for peace during a time of social and political turmoil. This period
was characterized by significant social and political upheavals, including the
civil rights movement, the Vietnam war, student protests and the rise of
feminism. People were questioning authority, challenging norms, and
advocating for peace and equality
.
I never enjoyed standard history class in school, but as I have gotten older, I
have become increasingly interested in more nontraditional history. I have
chosen to investigate the history of women as I have always wanted to study
more about the Women’s rights movement, but life is usually too busy for me
to commit any time to personal research ideas.
Thank you,
