Prior to beginning work on this Discussion forum, 1. In order to start thinking about history, think of a film, video, image, song, or piece of music that reminds you of an era or event in the past. Consider the film, video, image, song or piece of music that you selected. Explain why you chose this piece. Explain what it tells us about the historical event or era it depicts. Think about what you want your classmates to know about you as a person and your academic, professional, and personal goals. 2. Next, start thinking about your work for this course, which will focus on American history from 1877 to the present. One of the primary areas of focus in the course will be the examination of political and civil rights of traditionally disadvantaged groups within American Society and their struggles for social equity within American society. To this end, you will select one of the following disadvantaged groups and examine their experiences throughout the course, culminating in your Final Paper. (Your group choice does not have to relate to your chosen historical piece above.) African Americans Native Americans/American Indians Women Immigrants Consider which group you have chosen to focus on. Why have you chosen this group? If you are having trouble deciding, which groups are you most interested in and why? Hello All, My name is ---- but most of my friends and family call me ===== or Kens. I am 25 and I work parttime. I am a mother to two beautiful children of my own and am engaged to a wonderful man that gave me three beautiful bonus daughters. I have one dog, her mother died shortly after she gave birth, so we have had her since she was 3 weeks old. She, Nina, is now 5 and very protective of our family. We also rescued a kitten not too long ago and named him nitro because he has enormous bursts of energy. My hobbies mainly consist of family outings especially during the summer since I am from Ohio and the winters are so harsh. Personally, within the next 5 years I would like to have a teaching degree and be passionate about my career and have amazing summers spent with my family.
The film I chose is The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. I chose this film because it is a historical piece that sheds light on how inhumane people were being treated. I was forced to watch this movie by my seventh grade English teacher, it made me cry for days. In the movie a guards son is seen disappearing into a crowd of people being pushed into a gas chamber, only when he son goes missing does the guard show compassion and empathy even though he was executing other people's children daily I remember having many late-night talks with my mom about how my heart hurt for those people and how I did not understand how someone could lack empathy to let those things happen. It made me want to learn more about the era, the people and the events that were taking place. Even though this is a historical era I take interest in the group I will be choosing for the week 5 assignment is Native Americans/American Indians. I am choosing this group because I am Native American and shamefully it is a group, I am not very historically familiar with. I would love to take this opportunity to research and learn more.
