The Enlightenment was an 18th-century intellectual movement that emphasized reason,
science, and individualism. It was a period of intellectual and social change, where revolutionary
ideas about human rights, government, and society were being developed and explored. As a
result, the Enlightenment laid down the foundations for modernism. Modernism was a movement
that valued individualism, creativity, and self-expression, and rejected traditional forms of art,
literature, and music. Modernism also recognized the importance of science and rationality and
sought to challenge the status quo and bring about social change. Therefore, it can be argued that
the roots of modernism were in the Enlightenment, as the ideas and values that it promoted
formed a basis for the emergence of modernism (History of Modernism, n.d.).
Postmodernism thought and approaches can be seen as both a critique of modernism and
Enlightenment thought. Postmodernism is a reaction to the modernist movement. Which was
based on the Enlightenment ideals of progress, science, and rationality. Postmodernism is
skeptical of the Enlightenment’s claims of progress and absolute truth, instead emphasizing the
importance of relativism and subjectivity. Postmodernism also critiques modernism’s focus on
the individual and its lack of attention to social issues (Tate, n.d.). Postmodernism emphasizes
social and cultural context as an important aspect of understanding the world and rejects the
notion of objective truth. Postmodernism thought also critiques the Enlightenment’s privileging
of reason and argues for a more holistic understanding of knowledge. Overall, postmodernism
offers a critique of both modernism and Enlightenment thought by challenging the ideas of
progress, absolute truth, and rationalism. Modernism was a cultural movement that emerged in

the late 19th and early 20th centuries and marked a period of rapid industrialization,
urbanization, and technological advancement. It was characterized by a rejection of traditional
values and beliefs, a focus on a scientific and rational understanding of the world, and a belief in
progress and the power of human agency. Postmodern thought and approaches can be seen as a
critique of both modernism and Enlightenment thought (Mondal, 2014). Postmodernism is
characterized by a rejection of grand narratives, the idea of absolute truth, and a suspicion of the
idea of progress. It is a response to the perceived excesses and shortcomings of both the
Enlightenment and Modernism and questions the idea of a constant and universal human
experience.
Postmodernism approaches instead emphasize the importance of context, subjectivity,
and multiplicity of perspectives. Modernism and Postmodernism are two distinct ways of life and
thinking that emerged in the 18th century and have had a profound impact on education.
Postmodernism is viewed as a reaction against and a departure from modernism, with increased
emphasis on consumerism and superficial topics. This essay examines the relationship between
Modernism and Postmodernism and their impact on education, using a survey model and
documentary survey method.
