Hi Everyone,
For this discussion we are asked to choose a subculture that we identify with. A subculture is
defined as “an ethnic, regional, economic, pr social group exhibiting characteristic patterns of
behavior sufficient to distinguish it from others within an embracing culture or society”
[ CITATION Mer232 \l 1033 ] A subculture that I would consider myself in is Gen X.
Gen X are people born in the years between 1965 and 1980. Our generation was shaped by
economics and cultural factors that prevailed in the second part of the 20
th
century. We are the
first “modern generation” as we were the first to get introduced to all technologies that we have
today.[CITATION Nic22 \l 1033 ]
2) How might an insider experience this cultural expression? As an insider that grew up in this
culture, I can tell you that I remember when we didn’t have cell phones, didn’t have internet,
we had roof top antennas and only got 3 stations or cable to get to watch tv. The television
sets were the size of coffee tables with dials to turn and no remote controls. Then things
changed quickly. Seems like it literally happened in a blink of an eye. We got Satellite TV and
those dishes were HUGE!
I got my first gaming system called a TI or Texas Instrument and
my favorite game was called Munchman (very similar to PacMan). My dad got us a “home
computer” which was very large and used floppy disks as storage or programs came on them.
MTV was amazing and actually showed music videos instead of reality shows. I got my first
ever “Walkman” by Sony so I could listen to my favorite jams on cassette tapes with corded
headphones instead of walking around with huge radios. We were the generation that has seen
so many things come to pass. Internet, home computers the size of kitchen tables to now ones
the size of your hand, wired curly corded home phones to wireless cell phones, roof top
antennas for tv to now streaming over the internet, no seatbelts in cars to not being able to
drive without them, parents holding their little ones in their laps while in the car to having to
have car seats and having to be in them until your 7. So many things have changed. When I
stop and think about it, I feel like I grew up in the best generation ever. We still played outside
while our parents were inside the house playing cards and we didn’t worry about the “scary
things” that we now hear about. We came home from school to an empty house and had our
own key to get in and took care of ourselves till our parents got home. This was all normal
when I grew up. This was my generation. These are the things that an “insider” would have
experienced.
3) How might an outsider experience this cultural expression? Someone on the outside,
especially those of the older generations such as the “Baby Boomers”, might have seen us as
“apathetic, cynical, slackers, rebellious, or reluctant to grow up”,[ CITATION Fut19 \l 1033 ]
and that might have been the case until we all grew up. Now some of the richest and smartest
people in the world fit into that Gen X culture such as Elon Musk, Larry Page, and even JayZ.
Now as someone who looks back at our generation one might see us as independent, critical
thinkers, flexible, and self-reliant, and still possible the “latchkey” or “MTV generation”.
[ CITATION Rob21 \l 1033 ]
4)
How does adopting both insider and outsider perspectives inform your understanding of the
social impact of this cultural expression? I think that by looking at both the inside and outside
perspectives we get a full range of our generation, or the GEN X culture. I can honestly say
that I do understand where the older generation might have seen us as slakers, rebellious, or
reluctant to grow up. It was a new time and age, things were changing so fast it took us a
minute to catch our breath. We wanted to live every second and not miss any of it. As
someone from the newer generations looking back on ours, I can only tell you what my
daughter Kayla (she just turned 33) has told me. Her exact words were “Y’all were some of
the strongest, independent, hard-working people that completely ignore self-care and mental
health issues, and can’t open up and talk about their feelings, are very blunt when it comes to
communication. Also, most people your age are very reluctant to social change and some of
the people from your generation are less open to newer cultures.”
I think that by looking at
their viewpoints and at my own we can definitely get a feel of what the Gen Z culture is all
about.
