Module 5 Short Responses – Question 1 In the space below, specify which historical lens you'd like to use for this exercise.
I would like to use a religious historical lens. I am curious as to how whites utilized their religion to segregate blacks.
Module 5 Short Responses – Question 2 Next, formulate a research question about the civil rights movement (historical time from 1954 – 1968), using the lens you've chosen.
How was the religion of Christianity used to eliminate segregation?
Module 5 Short Responses – Question 3 First, go back and review the research question you developed in Step 1. For Step 2, first name two different primary sources that you might use to answer that question. Be
as specific as you can. Your primary sources should be found using the Shapiro Library.
The first primary source I would utilize is a newspaper page from the Evening Star published on May 23, 1954. This newspaper page details the Supreme Court overturning the ruling of legal segregation. It provides a primary source overview of legal segregation and the populations general feeling.
Humanities, N. E. for the. (1954, May 23). Evening star. [volume] (Washington, D.C.) 1854-

The second primary source I would utilize is another page from the Evening Star newspaper. This page was published on June 16, 1963 and presents Martin Luther King's letters from Birmingham Jail. This also presents a general overview of the subject of civil rights.
Humanities, N. E. for the. (1963, June 16). Evening star. [volume] (Washington, D.C.) 1854-
1972, June 16, 1963, Image 50. Chroniclingamerica.loc.gov, E. https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83045462/1963-06-16/ed-1/seq-50/
Module 5 Short Responses – Question 4 Next, name two different secondary sources you could use to answer your research question. Again, be as specific as you can. Your secondary sources should be found
using the Shapiro Library.
The first secondary source that I would utilize is titled From Reconciliation to Revolution : The Student Interracial Ministry, Liberal Christianity, and the Civil Rights Movement by David P. Cline. This secondary source details how religion aided in eliminating segregation.
David P. Cline. (2016). From Reconciliation to Revolution?: The Student Interracial Ministry, Liberal Christianity, and the Civil Rights Movement. The University of North Carolina Press.
The second secondary source that I would utilize is titled Black Fundamentalists: Conservative Christianity and Racial Identity in the Segregation Era. By Daniel R. BareKincraft: The Making of Black Evangelical Sociality. By Todne Thomas. This secondary source details how blacks utilized religion in order to collaborate with whites and widen discussions in an era of segregation.

Module 5 Short Responses – Question 5 Construct a thesis statement that provides an answer to the research question you posed
in Step 1. Base your response on the historical evidence that's been presented in this course so far, as well as any research you may have done on your own. The religion of Christianity aided black folks in creating discussions among themselves following segregation as well as collaborating with white folks in a peaceful manner.
Module 5 Short Responses – Question 6 Name three specific historical events that can be considered contributory causes of the passage of the Voting Rights Act. Briefly explain why you believe each of these events contributed to the passage of the Act.
The first historical event that can be considered contributory is Martin Luther King Jr. being arrested in Selma, Alabama. This caused a non-violent march which showcased non-violent protesters being beaten and thus leading to a sympathetic population.
Another historical even that can be considered contributory is the Brown v Board of Education case. By the Supreme Court ruling to desegregate school, black folks were empowered, and it gave the Civil Rights Movement a big boost in power and population.
