MUS 110aa Assignment #1 Module 1 Comparison of Two Performances of a Popular Song (100 Points – 10% of Final Grade) Assignment "You're My Best Friend" Queen : FT 000013 L184 VR136 16x9 3m 240104O TV37 (youtube.com) The Once : The Once - You're My Best Friend - YouTube 1) Compare the performances by describing the similarities and differences in vocal style and timbre, recording production (editing effects, etc), formal structure (does the remake follow the same form as the original) instrumentation, melodic construction, dynamics, and tempo. Disregard the video production: for this assignment, we are focusing on the audio only. The original song by Queen and the cover by The Once are the same and different in many ways. In both songs the lyrics are the same and the tempo is very similar if not the same. One of the biggest differences is that the two songs have different music genres. Queen has a classic rock or pop rock feel and sound to the song. Meanwhile, the song being sung by The Once comes off more as a country song. The instruments used for each of the two songs are different as well. In Queens original song you have the electric guitar, a piano, and a drum set. On the other hand, for the version sung by The Once you have an acoustic guitar and a banjo. Looking at the different dynamics in each version of the song, there are differences there too. The original version, by Queen, has more variation in dynamics. Some vocal parts are quieter than others, some instruments are louder than others. In contrast to the version of the song that is sung by The Once there is not much change when looking at the dynamics in the song. The melodic construction of each version of the song was harder to study. While listening to each of the songs I was trying to decide whether the melody between the instruments used in The Once’s version held the same melody that is played by the instruments in the original version. To me, because the instruments sound so different it is hard to say whether these melodies are the same or different. The melody when it comes to the vocals seems to be the same, although it sounds like the singer in The Once hangs onto some of the notes a little longer than what Queen had. 2) Which of the versions do you prefer? Which characteristics described in the first part of this assignment may have had a factor in this preference?
Before listening to the two versions of the song I thought that I would like Queen’s original version. Queen has such a classic voice and so many classic songs, but surprisingly I ended up liking The Once version better. I think that the biggest characteristic that I mentioned in the first part that played the biggest role in my preference would be that the songs are different genres. The version of the song sung by The Once has more of a country feel to it. I have grown up in the country and it is my go-to music genre, so I think that swayed my preference.
