Unit 14-Contemporary Art Review Name: Alyssa Crawford 1. Describe the function of Nancy Holt’s “Stone Enclosure: Rock Rings.” Why is it considered Environmental art? The piece an architectural type of space that functions as a place for a viewer to be a part of the landscape. It is considered environmental art due to the nature of it being outdoors and an interactive element within the viewers and the landscape in which it is presented. 2. Describe how the “Wrapped Reichstag” was made and explain the historic symbolism of the Reichstag and why it was chosen to be wrapped by Christo. The creation was made from a building wrapped in plastics and fabrics as a form of environmental art. The building was a parliament that has been previously used by Nazis to hold propaganda exhibitions there, therefor making it a sensitive place to try to enact such a large-scale public project. 3. Examine the CAD Drawings of Gehry’s, “Bilbao Museum,” and describe the types of shapes you see. How are the materials and overall building shape related to Post-Modern architecture? The building is made up of sleek curved shapes and circles that are made of a reflective metal. The geometric shapes that are arranged in a traditional architectural manner are used in a new, fun, and eccentric way to allow for this to be called a work of post-modern architecture. 4. Explain the symbolism of Kiki Smith’s “Mary Magdalene” in relation to Donatello’s “Mary Magdalene” and relate it back to Body Art and Feminism.
The piece is about women’s sexuality and the traditional cliché that it has. The piece goes along with Donatello’s piece in lines of the entrapment oof female sexuality as well. This falls into the feminist art movement because it entails a narrative that brings women’s needs to the surface. 5. What is the symbolism of Cindy Sherman’s, “Untitled?” Relate this painting to Feminist art and Conceptual art and to Raphael’s, “La Fornarina.” Take on women and how they are perceived in love and relationships and sex. Define the following: 6. Post-Modern Architecture: Post-modern architecture is an eclectic, wide-spread collection of styles which take elements from traditional architecture and combine them into new forms. 7. Environmental Art: Environmental art is any indoor or outdoor art which is created to interact with its environment and can be temporary or permanent. In the 1970’s outdoor sculptures started to be funded by public grants and private owners. Environmental art cannot be sold unlike many art forms; it encourages the viewer to engage through interaction. 8. Body Art and Feminism: In feminist art (1960’s-70’s) women created art that retold women’s contributions through history, which highlighted the accomplished and experiences of women. Body art is derived from the feminist movement and is a return to the human form and the female body. It often addresses topics such as social issues, AIDS, gender, race, and beaten women. 9. Conceptual Art: Conceptual art is idea-based art and in it, the mental concept is more important than the subject matter of the object. Text is sometimes used in conceptual art, and it rejects art as a consumer good.
