1. When, if ever, was classical music a popular music? Is classical music still being composed today? What period or style is most nostalgic for the classical music fan? Classical music is a formal art form that arose in European music in the 18 th century. Its peak popularity was during an era they call the “classical period” in the 1750s to early 1820s. The romantic era in the 19 th century was part of the peak. Even though its popularity declined, it is still being composed today, being played at numerous music halls throughout the world. The sonata style of classical music is one of the most important forms, forming the basis of the music. This and perhaps the time period of Mozart are the most nostalgic. 2. When and what style of jazz was the most popular? What jazz style is currently the most popular among jazz aficionados? Do they match? What period or style is most nostalgic for the jazz fan? The time of the “Jazz Age” was a period in the 1920s and 1930s. This is the time in which jazz music was the most popular, focusing more on the “HOT” Jazz music. Jumping forward to the 1950s we can see the emergence of the most popular style of the art form. This would be Hard Bop, a subgenre that is related to bebop music with hints of blues and soul. Over time the most popular form of the genre has evolved, switching from “HOT” to Hard Bop. When it comes to nostalgic aspects, smooth jazz might be the most. 3. What style of rock was the most popular in its history? Is it still the most popular style today? What period or style is most nostalgic for rock fans? What style do you think will be studied most by future generations of students looking back at rock’s development? Alternative rock was one of the most popular style of rock in history. It encompasses numerous subgenres and has had significant strike on society. The most nostalgic style of rock and roll might be classical rock. This incorporates the time from the 60s to 80s and multiple subgenres as well. They are guitar-driven songs, featuring artists like the infamous Jimi Hendrix. Names like his, Led Zeppelin, Elvis Presley, and The Rolling Stones are all prominent within the rock community. They are typically mentioned by rock enthusiasts when talking about its history. Jumping to the future, on the surface level I believe classical rock will be studied the most by future generations for reasons I mentioned above. 4. Is rock a music only for youth? Will the boomers’ interest in classic rock give way to each succeeding generation of youth? Can older rockers ever create new vital rock styles? Use your research to support your position. Be sure to cite your sources. Rock music is not only for the youth. Although its beginnings were targeted to younger generations and associated with “teen rebellion,” its listeners today vary greatly in age. The Pew Research Center found that, “rock is the favorite musical style of those ages 16 to 29., 30 to 49 and 50 to 64. The only age group that doesn’t like rock the best is adults ages 65 and older,” (Taylor). My parents’ interest in classical rock was portrayed onto me. Growing up listening to this music became a part of me, giving me love for the genre. In an article by American
Songwriter, it was said by writer Charles Cross, “nostalgia born from one’s youth also plays a major force in classic rock’s continued popularity,” (Uitti). This sense of nostalgia will continuously attract the younger generations, allowing the Boomer’s love for classical rock to give way to youth. It may be difficult for older rockers to create new vital rock styles as they are so used to the older art forms. It’s classic and well liked amongst the rock community, so venturing out may be strenuous. They are good at what they do, and perhaps not so good at the newer styles. This doesn’t mean it’s impossible though. With the changing of time, everyone and everything evolves. If the artist is determined, they could in fact create new styles. Taylor, Paul. “Iv.
