Rock as we know it has been challenged by the new electronic dance music and should reject it. If so, can you think of any other time rock was challenged in the same way? Just as rock has been challenged by the new electronic dance music, it was also challenged similarly by disco music upon its start in the 1960s. Up rose the disco era, overtaking the 70s. It was also a slight symbol of rebellion, and the hippie stereotype was created. Although it bounced back from its shadows, disco overtook the popular eye, burying rock music down for a bit Electronic rock is a perfect response to the technological fascination of the culture of the 1990s. Do you think the turntable has become a valid musical instrument? Yes, I believe the turntable has become a valid musical instrument. With its long history, originating back in the 1940s, it has become a part of many musical styles and opened numerous doors within the music industry. An article by Sweetwater (INSYNC) describes the turntable as a recording revolution. They provide us with the countless possibilities of its use. “ The next truly earth-shattering music revolution after recording was hip-hop and its DJs who, using the turntable as their instrument, spliced records meant for front-to-back listening with remixes, mashups, precision cuts, and so much more,” (). Many alternatives are given with this musical instrument, and I think after everything it deserves this recognition. Rock will fade to be more static like jazz and the new electronic styles will become the popular music of the United States. Do you agree or disagree? New electronic dance styles are on the rise, such as EDM. Others around me and I have succumbed to this infatuation, going to raves and acting out the upbeat movements of the music. Although this is true, I don’t see this scenario happening. Yes, EDM is popular, and yes, it is gaining recognition, but I still believe that it is an acquired taste. Part of its fun is the interactions you gain out an about while collectively listening to it, such as at the raves I mentioned before. I don’t think this is a complete cause of rock potentially going static though. It increases competition within the music industry, giving rock musicians more of a challenge. An article by the Good Men Project discusses, “ The traditional model of making and selling rock music has been disrupted by the advent of online streaming, downloading, and sharing platforms. These platforms have reduced the revenues and profits of record labels and artists, making it harder for them to invest in new talent and promotion,” (). With this being said, I won’t say rock is dead or anything. With new artists continuously emerging with their own twists, the genre has potential to reemerge just as it has before with situations like Disco. Rock has always been the music of youth, and it is now time for the millennial generation to claim the music market and cultural center stage. Do you agree or disagree? Perhaps it is time for the millennial generation to claim the music market and cultural center stage, as rock music was “their” music after all. They could make new music that would be able to appeal to older generations, rather
than all this new music that usually just appeals to the youth. In the end though, I don’t think they should completely claim the market. It is important for the youth to enjoy the music and have some sense of control. Although kind of morbid, they are the ones that will be around the longest. When you gain a lifelong fan, such as those for rock bands like Led Zeppelin or Nirvana, it truly is almost the length of a lifetime. Typically the youth are heavier music listeners then those above them. Does rock now look back historically rather than to the future as jazz and classical music do? I believe rock does now look back historically rather than to the future. When looking at many different websites and articles, when discussing rock much of it is told before the 2000s. An article by American Songwriter discusses iconic moments within rock and roll, naming this like album debuts and Woodstock. There were many revolutionary occurrences within the creation of rock and roll, and it has been a while since. Although there are endless possibilities and rock could potentially create a new chapter in history, as of now we are moving steadily with nothing exciting happening. The creation of rock and its rebellious nature caused an uproar, and the Woodstock festival created a moment in history. I don’t think we will every have something that arises so much attention with rock in the future. “ It gave metaphorical and symbolic expression to an alternative set of values. It represented a thinly veiled critique of established ideas about gender, sexuality, and values,” (). This was incredibly revolutionary as the topic was extremely sensitive and almost unheard of at the time. It opened numerous doors to the youth, expanding viewpoints and shedding light on important situations. With its combination of musical styles and usage during the 1900s, the 2000s won’t be able to compare to its subversive nature. https://www.sweetwater.com/insync/the-history-of-turntablism/ https://goodmenproject.com/featured-content/is-rock-music-dead-the-rise-and-fall-of-a-cultural- icon-kpkn/#:~:text=Rock%20music%2C%20once%20the%20king,history%2C%20and%20a %20potential%20future . https://www.insidehighered.com/opinion/blogs/higher-ed-gamma/2023/06/27/rewriting-history- rock-n-roll
