Name: Meghan McGrory Primary Source Analysis Worksheet Please select two documents to analyze from the Digital Public Library of America , the collection of primary sources that is included in the course materials for this module. The prompts are based on the 5 C’s of Historical Thinking that we examined earlier this term. The Wounded Knee Massacre from the Encyclopedia of the Great Plains Exploring the Stories Behind Native American Boarding Schools from the Library of Congress. Change Over Time: Does the document tell us anything about how events, attitudes, or conditions described have evolved or remained consistent over time? The Wounded Knee Massacre document does tell us how events, attitudes and conditions have evolved over time. This battle was once thought of a victory but is now known as a symbol of injustice, violence and cultural misunderstandings. The Native American Boarding Schools document does tell us how events , attitudes and conditions have evolved over time. Luckily, Native American children are no longer forced into boarding schools where they were “civilized” and had to leave their families behind. Context: Place the document in its broader historical, cultural, and social settings. The Wounded Knee Massacre document shows that during that time in history, tensions were very high between the Native Americans and the US Government and the Ghost Dance that was misunderstood. Culturally, the Wounded Knee Massacre was detrimental to Native American people and they have to carry that reminder with them and what was once thought as a victory is remembered as a tragedy in history. Socially, this massacre affected many Native American communities and left them without much trust for the US Government. The American Indian Movement went into Wounded Knee in the 1970’s demanding justice for what had happened there. The Native American Boarding Schools document shows that historically these schools were formed in the 1860’s with a goal of “civilizing” Native American children into their idea of proper American culture. The schools were run by either the government or Christian missionaries. The Carlisle Indian School became the most well known establishment. Culturally, the Native American children who attended these boarding schools were stripped of their names, identities and their way of life but some resisted. These schools became a part of Native American history. Socially, these children had to attend the
school, they could not decline. These boarding schools still have an impact on Native communities. Causality: Try to identify causes and consequences within the source. The Wounded Knee Massacre causes were drought and economic depression, the Ghost Dance Movement and the paranoia that Daniel F. Royer suffered from when he thought the Ghost Dance was threatening. Consequences were the possible 300 Native American lives that were lost, the media attention and being remembered as a forever tragedy. The Native American Boarding Schools' causes were the civilization process that encouraged American education for Native Americans, their goal of taking the children far from their home and way of life and getting them accustomed to American culture by cutting their hair and adopting military-like discipline. Contingency: How are the events or perspectives described in the document influenced by preceding conditions and choices? The Wounded Knee Massacre events described in the document were influenced by historical content, misinterpretations and personal choices that led to this tragedy. The Native American Boarding Schools events described in the document were influenced by government policies, cultural clashes and discipline, and personal choices. Complexity: Are there multiple layers and perspectives present in the source? The Wounded Knee Massacre document does provide multiple layers and perspectives in the source. There is the perspective of the Lakota people and the pain they had to endure and there's the military side who felt threatened by the Natives. The Native American Boarding Schools document does provide multiple layers and perspectives due to the Christian missionaries and the military who founded these schools and whose goal was to “civilize” that Natives. Conclusions: Draw some conclusions about the document based on your analysis.
