Possible Selves What are possible selves? According to Kail and Cavanaugh (2016) possible selves represent what we could become, what we would like to become, and what we are afraid of becoming. These representations can be our goals, our fears, and they are powered by our motivations. The strategies for promoting resilience are identified. Then, the ethical issues and cultural strategies are explored. Next, the possible selves and stages of reflective judgment integration are compared. According to Kail and Cavanaugh (2016) possible selves helps to understand how stability and change operates in adults’ personality. Strategies A person’s mindset is important to developing resilience, optimum development, and wellness in adults. Understanding that failures are a normal part of life and mistakes are going to happen. Resilience according to Developing Resilience (2021) is having the ability to adopt and bounce back when things do not go as planned. Learning to accept the mistake and figuring out how to move on while learning from the experience is essential to building resilience. Aging well focuses on the ability to bounce back and moving forward regardless of the adversity. Optimum development and wellness in adults, according to Wellness & Resilience (2019) is cultivating a healthy, realistic attitude about the process of growing older. Strategies to aging well and developing resilience include learning to relax, becoming aware of one’s thoughts, shifting perspectives to a more positive perspective, learning from one’s mistakes and pushing forward, and promoting self-confidence. Having a healthy perspective and resilience can prevent depression and anxiety. Adults who have built up their resilience, have created a shield to help decrease and offset other mental health conditions. Resilience improves the quality of life 2
and promotes longevity. Having that feeling of control improves one’s self-esteem and confidence. Ethics and Culture Strategies According to the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics (2014) in section A.2.c. counselors communicate information in ways that are both developmentally and culturally appropriate. The counselor is ethically violating the ACA Code of Ethics when they are working with clients from a different culture, and they are not using clear and understandable language to communicate with them. The counselor is required to use a qualified interpreter to ensure clients understand. Another ethical issue would be if the counselor discriminates against their client or takes advantage of the client’s lack of knowledge of procedures. The counselor is to educate themselves to increase their cultural awareness and competence. According to the ACA Code of Ethics (2014) in section C.2.a. counselors only practice within the boundaries of their competence and with multicultural counseling, counselors are required to gain knowledge, personal awareness, and sensitivity to be culturally competent. To promote resilience with a client from another culture, the counselor should also be familiar with their client’s culture and worldview. Then the counselor should align their counseling strategies with the client’s culture to promote resilience. A counselor achieves this by using techniques and tools their client is comfortable with and those that are culturally acceptable. An example would be meditation. Meditation is acceptable in some cultures and discouraged in some religions. Counselors who are not familiar with their client’s culture may cause them harm and damage the therapeutic relationship, as well as the therapeutic process.
