Introduction
The French revolution started in 1789 while Louis XVI was under rule. The revolution started due to the tension of money problems when Louis XVI couldn’t collect any more taxes from the citizens. These money problems were inherited from Louis XV leaving France under strain which led up to the war. This war ended up in 1799 with Napoleon Bonaparte as a leader establishing the French Consulate. The French revolution gave a new era in history and in art from which we get Neoclassical and Romantic art. The effect of the French Revolution on painting and/or sculpture
According to National Gallery of Art (n.d.) along with the French revolution, artists used art to portray moral and political issues and neoclassicism was adopted. After this time revolution was known for its neoclassicism art style and artists adopted vivid contrast colors. Artists such as Jacques Louis David who was also a politician, was known to be a supporter of the French revolution. He was also known for being a dictator of the arts. (N.G.A., n.d.).
Romantic paintings were mostly based on subjective expression and emotions, during the
French revolution, artists had more freedom to express their desires in art which help to showcase political issues. Romanticism was influenced by the French Revolution as well. Romanticism was in a way a response to the aristocracy of the age of Enlightenment. Painting from the Neoclassical period An important painting from the Neoclassical period by Jacques Louis David can be an example of Neoclassical art. One of David’s most important artworks is “Napoleon Crossing the Alps”, commemorating Napoleon’s troops crossing the Alps, this art was commissioned by Charles IV King of Spain. This artwork portrays the journey of Napoleon and his troops to fight the Austrians, (Khan Academy n.d.).

, 1800–1, Painting from the Romantic period An important sculpture from the Romanticism era that had great influence during and after the French revolution is “La Marseillaise” by Francois Rude. In this sculpture the artist represented the leading of the native French towards their victory, it is a well-illustrated sentiment, you can see the gestures, feelings, and reactions it is an iconic sculpture (McCoy, D. C. B., & McCoy, D. C. B., n.d.).
