There are 4 lenses of the Liberal Arts. Social Science, Natural Science, History and
Humanities each specializing in their own area of focus. The focus in Social Science is
individual or group behaviors and how both can vary and differ depending on their settings or the
environment they are placed in. The Natural Science lens is the study of living organisms. The
focus of natural sciences is the physical and natural world around us. The History Lens is the
study and focus of past events, forms of documentation and scholarly sources to understand
history and how it correlates to the events and things taking place around us today. The
Humanities lens focus is ethics, language, lifestyle, the arts of different cultures and backgrounds
all around the world. All four lenses have types of evidence used to look through each lens. Social sciences
methods and techniques rely on other primary sources to gather data such as journals, past
interviews, diaries, etc. The natural sciences information is absolute. This is because theories are
continuously tested to ensure that the data is accurate. The method used is the Scientific Method.
History uses the evidence from past events such as newspapers, scholarly journals, artifacts. The
Humanities method is studying the similarities and differences of all cultures by using a
magnifying glass on things like literature, paintings, interviews. The similarities I noticed among
the lenses is that most of them use similar methods of study and evidence just in different ways.
The differences are the focus of study and the methods they use such as the natural sciences are
more theory and scientific based opposed to the social sciences are more environmental and
psychologically based.
The topic I am choosing is Climate Change. Over the years many things and concerns have
been brought to my attention surrounding climate change. There’s not a lot I know about Climate
change except for the fact that it is a very big concern and issue in the world today. So many
different factors play apart in the climate change and not enough people are aware of it, believe
in it, or care enough to really do anything about it. I know there is a big and consistent argument
going on surrounding climate change and a need for more to become knowledgeable on the topic
and figure out how we can help prevent it. The changes in weather such as having warmer
weather in months that usually produce colder weather is a part of climate change as well as
natural disasters occurring more frequently and randomly and in most recent cases being more
severe than in the past well. My question, what are, if any the drastic changes in the recurring
factors such as natural disasters and weather in the past and present and if there is a way to
change or slow down climate change or are we too late? There has been a drastic change in
climate change between now and the past. This is because of increased human activities and
development over the years, has and continues to “warm” the planet. Though no one person can
be the one to stop climate change, every person can help by doing simple things such as
changing a light bulb, recycling, being more eco-friendly aware etc. Every little thing counts.
The two lenses I chose to focus for my topic is the Natural Science and History Lens. The
reason I chose these two specific lenses is because of their focus points in research and how they
relate directly to my topic Climate change. The history lens is the study of past events and how it
correlates to the events that are taking place today. The Natural science lens focus on the
physical and natural world around us.
