After reading “Preface to the Lives" by Giorgio Vasari and Leonardo's "Paragone," write a Reading Response that addresses the following question in a minimum of 500 words. 1) What does Vasari describe as the defining characteristics of this new age of painting? What have these artists done that made them different/unique from their predecessors? He describes that the defining characteristics of the new age of painting is the styles of art we use and the amount of detail we can accurately display in a piece. At the beginning of this reading, it is about the creation of Earth, nature, and humans being the first form of art. With the purpose of this being to show that over time we always work towards the goal of being able to perfectly represent nature in every aspect and over time we get closer and closer to this goal. Along with perfecting it we must preserve our art pieces because art can show history and artists take what s happening in the world into consideration when making their piece. Along with artwork being able to show history it has the ability to show emotion and action inside the piece and overtime interpretation can be lost since so art must be preserved physically and in its interpretation. 2) Which art form does Leonardo claim is superior, and why? Do you agree with Leonardo's position? Explain why. From the reading, Leonardo believes that painting is superior to sculpting. Leonardo says painting is more mentally tiring and sculpting is more physically tiring. For painters they must consider light, shadow, color, volume, outline, location, distance, nearness, motion, and rest; for a sculpture, they only need to consider volume, outline, location, motion, and rest. So, while creating a painting you must use more thought behind the setup of the painting. Another reason painting is superior is that for a sculpture the artist only needs to create the centerpiece or the focus of the piece, while in a painting you create the setting for the whole piece as well as create the point of view that the painting will be from. Lastly, a painting is superior to a sculpture because with a painting you must also create layers and color. If there is fog or something transparent or covering another section of the painting they must create an accurate representation of how it would look if the art were a real place and point of view. For a counter-argument, saying sculpting is the superior art form it could be said that they have tougher less comfortable work environments since painters are able to dress nicely and not worry about messing up their neat and tidy workspace. On the other hand, sculptors when creating a piece, there will be dust and pieces of marble all over and must hear the constant sound of banging or scraping from tools contacting the material. Another reason one could believe sculpting is superior is because sculptures last longer and survive through more environmental conditions, but even though this is true an artist s choice of materials isn’t and shouldn’t be a dictator on what art form is superior . So, in conclusion, I agree with Leonardo’s position on the question of what form of art is superior. I still believe in no way is sculpting easy or quick to master but there is more too perfect and consider when creating a piece of art.
