Introduction and Theme
For this review I am looking at “Migration, embedded networks and social capital: towards theorising North American ethnic geography,” authored by Susan W. Hardwick. Hardwick had earned a Masters from California State University with her thesis about Chinese settlement in Butte County, California. In 1968 she completed her doctoral thesis about ethnic residential and commercial patterns in Sacramento, California, specifically related to the Russian
American experience. Hardwick served as staff in earth science and geography departments at multiple colleges and universities during her career. These include Cosumnes River College, California State University, Chico, Texas State University, and her final post at the University of Oregon. Hardwick’s research revolved around migration flows, spatial patterns, identities of immigrants, and urban social landscapes. The theme of this article is how social networks relate to the flow of immigrants. More specifically how this flow in information can assist in the easier transition of migrants to a new area and keeping more migrants flowing in. Summary
Early in the article Hardwick discusses the question of whether these social networks are always a positive for migrants moving into an area. She uses the example of how sometimes these strong social networks can lead to migrants not become a full participant in the local society as well as these networks can prevent outsiders from becoming parts of these communities.
