Within this essay this writer will be discussing whether getting a degree in information technology (IT) is more valued in employment rather than having certifications. Although degrees and certifications may be beneficial for someone to reach their goals, “the main differences between certifications and college degrees are the time it takes for them to earn them, the cost associated and the amount of knowledge gained during studies” (Amsler, 2021). Also, degrees do not expire while certifications will have to be renewed and bachelor degrees may lead to senior level positions. On the other hand, people who only have certifications may only have junior level positions available to them as opposed to a senior level position that are available to some people who have their degree in a field. According to Amsler (2021), a bachelor’s degree is an ideal way to go if an individual has the availability, support, and proper resources. While certifications, specifically in the field of IT, may be flexible and provide a specialized skill set, degrees do not expire “ a college degree, a degree will last forever” (Amsler,
2021), offers higher potential for initial job landing spots, and can potentially earn you more money, which is why this writer believes a bachelor’s degree is worth the investment. In the technological field, skills are valued but employers are not looking for just skills. Certifications help people gain skills and master them, but by receiving a degree, a person is able
to gain skills outside of just technological skills that can help benefit them such as “communication, critical thinking, creative thinking and problem-solving” that many employers, even in technological fields, indicate they are looking for” (Collier, 2019, as cited in Newman). By a person receiving their degree, they learn the fundamentals of humanities such as respecting different cultures, languages, religious beliefs, and societal values. Many employers value degrees for this reason because real life situations at the job happen and a candidate that is well

rounded and knows how to work well with other people may get the nod over someone who may
have better skills but if the person doesn't add any value in other categories, thats where a degree comes in to place and adds more value to a employee or someone looking to get hired. Newman also states that although tech students in areas like engineering may receive higher returns on the jobs they get after school, it tends to narrow out over the years. Students who receive degrees in humanities start to receive more jobs as needs change and they are more able to adapt as some tech skills fade away quickly and are no longer useful or needed. There are many other students who have degrees in tech where they gained knowledge of humanities and what Newman said applies to these students as well because they have some foundational education in different humanities fields which allow these students to be more well rounded then only having tech skills without skills that help them adapt to the world and how fast industries or job needs can change. Secondly, degrees last for a lifetime while certifications have to be renewed every two to three years. Although the time commitment is longer than getting a certification in IT, a person would gain more knowledge since degrees also allow students to gain skills in arts and sciences that allow an employee to be more well rounded as this writer mentioned earlier. Earning a certification may only last up to 6 months but at the same time, you may have to go back to earn another one depending on the job you are trying to get. The more certificates you gain prolongs the amount of time you are ready to work. Once you do gain all the certifications, you have to recertify and take the test again as well as learning any new content that is added to the course. While learning never stops, learning on the job rather than having to study by yourself for another certification can possibly be frustrating and time consuming in the long run. Also online degrees are something that gets looked at by employers and are becoming degrees that benefit
