th
centry
Year the composition was completed: 1943. In 1943, the US Mint began producing the one-cent coin in steel due to copper shortages during World War I.
Can you hum the melody of the piece? I could hum this piece if I listened to it enough. Is it memorable? Although The Oak is a beautiful piece, it was slow and didn’t catch my attention enough.
Are there more lines of music being played other than the melody (harmony)? Yes, there are multiple harmonies happening in this piece.
If there is harmony, does it compliment (pleasant sounding) or contrast (unpleasant sounding ) the melody? Yes, the harmonies in this piece flow together beautifully.
Is the piece of music thinly scored (few instruments/voices)? Or thickly scored (many instruments/voices)? This is
a thickly scored piece. You can hear many different instruments throughout.
Musical expression is the “art of playing or singing music with emotional communication”. o
How did the dynamics (volume) effect the emotion of the piece? o
How did the tempo (speed) effect the emotion of the piece? The dynamics and tempo went together in this piece. When the volume went
low, the speed slowed down as well. These two together created a beautiful emotional moment.
IV.
Write one paragraph of personal reaction and insight, underlining music terms
used.
The Oak by Florence Prince was a beautiful piece put together that demonstrated emotion. I appreciated the dramatic changes in tempo
from largo
to alegro.
The moments of smooth accelerando
creating dissonance
in harmony created a dramatic appeal to this piece. The fortissimo
towards the end of the piece created a
think texture.
