2 Practice Activity: Victim Impact Statement Victim Impact Statements describe how the crime has affected each aspect of a victim's life and provide a perspective on the crime. This statement is usually delivered to the judge or prosecutor, whether it is handwritten, prerecorded, or spoken. A Victim Impact Statement outlines the financial, social, physical, or mental losses incurred because of the crime. This statement is often an important part of a criminal case, as it can provide insight into the harm caused by the crime. It is an opportunity for the victim to express their feelings and emotions and can provide closure for them. Furthermore, it can motivate the judge or prosecutor to impose a harsher sentence. When you were eleven years old, what kind of gift did you receive for your birthday? It is difficult for me to recall. This is a birthday that I am sure my son will remember for many years to come. When we visited the mall, he would stare longingly through the window at the sneakers without ever asking for them. Knowing that I had little spare cash, he understood the value of a dollar as an 11-year-old. Because I am a single parent, the only person who cares for him is me; his father has left and refuses to participate in his care. My family depends on me working twelve-hour shifts six days a week to maintain a reasonable standard of living. I'm unable to provide him with the shoes and gifts he desires, but I try to make up for it with hugs and words of encouragement. I tell him that I understand his frustration and that I'm thankful for his understanding. I tell him how much I love him and how proud I am of him. I would not have purchased these sneakers for my son if I had known that I would suffer heartbreak and agony days later. The first person he wanted to show these sneakers to be an older boy who lives down the street.
