2 Anxiety Assignment Tools As we get older, we tend to find ourselves in bigger predicaments such as situations at work, financial changes, family changes and maybe moving for better job and life opportunities. These overstimulation’s that can happen is also known as anxiety. According to the American Psychological Association (2023) “ Anxiety is an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts, and physical changes like increased blood pressure (A.P.A, 2023).” This disorder is one of my personal favorites to write about because there is a lot of information that you can use to your knowledge to try and self-treat your anxiety. However, as a child I did not understand these overthinking and sweating a lot whenever I got uncomfortable in a situation or environment. Though, as a kid I hardly thought it was anxiety I would think I was getting sick before a test. Throughout my school life it was a challenge for me to stay still and not over think before a major exam or quiz. I knew I was getting test anxiety the way I would sweat and tremble a lot. I believe that as we get older, we become aware of our surroundings that can possibly influence the stimulation that person might be experiencing. This can also trigger anxiety attacks whether the person feels a certain type of way. In my personal experience, my anxiety triggers when I meet a new group of people because, I despise changes in dynamics as well as feeling like I am being judged by strangers. Though, there are different types of anxieties for example, separation anxiety, test anxiety, and even social anxiety which is also referred as social phobia. Anxiety can impact the body by your muscle always being tense. Not only that, your body starts to become adaptive at being distress at any given time whilst also becoming even more stress on top of being
3 stressed out from a different situation. Brody (2021) states that “When you're stressed, the brain responds by prompting the release of cortisol, nature's built-in alarm system (Brody ,2021).” This common disorder can also make your body overeat which is why I personally feel that having anxiety can cause an eating disorder as well. I personally think that many people who overeat, have some sort of situation that they cannot control. Thus, triggering their anxiety as a well as their overstimulation. Anxiety may also affect the mind by always overthinking about the smallest situation and making it seem grand. It is unfortunate that those who have been diagnosed with having anxiety are stigmatized by friends and family by always looking at that person differently. Furthermore, one of the ways anxieties gets evaluated is by using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder questionnaire (GAD-7). The GAD-7 is a seven-item instrument that is used to measure the severity of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). This assessment tool is used for those who suffer an addiction and want to figure out any sort of anxiety triggers they would encounter with. Its main reason why the Generalized Anxiety Disorder is to inform the client where they need most help with their anxiety. Another way it is useful is for is to detect depression anxiety. However, the next assessment tool is called Patient health questionnaire (PHQ-9). After learning about the patient health questionnaire, it is known to be used for anxiety as well. Though, studies have found it more applicable for depression rather than anxiety. Fortini states that, “PHQ -9 seems to be more acceptable to screen for depression than GAD-7 for screening anxiety” ( Fortini, 2021). This clearly underestimates the use of the GAD-7 since by now, we know that the other assessment tools are not as useful. Since both tools are used for symptoms of severity depression, they enhance the
